What will the apprentice be doing?

To assist in the education of pupils within the school.

Supporting teaching staff in the general management of the classroom.

Undertaking activities, as directed by teaching staff, with individuals or small groups of pupils. Providing clerical/admin support, e.g., office duties, data input, photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.

Supervising groups of pupils and participating in general activities including giving sensitive support and intervention in children’s play, including before and after school.


To be responsible for the organisation, classroom maintenance, setting out, clearing away and care of resources to create a purposeful and attractive learning environment, as directed by teaching staff.

Assisting in the preparation, maintenance and repair of books, apparatus, and equipment, to include cataloguing and stocktaking of all resources, as part of the learning support team. Preparing pupils’ work for display in the classroom and around the school.


Working with pupils directly on curriculum related tasks under the direction of teaching staff. Giving relevant feedback to teaching staff regarding the social, emotional, and physical needs of pupils thus offering teaching staff support in their assessment. Following school policy documents and schemes of work to keep updated with school documentation.

Assisting in the supervision of pupils particularly at break and lunchtime periods.


Attending to sick or injured pupils.

Administer medication to pupils in accordance with the school’s policy and procedures (only where the postholder, in accordance with the LEA guidance, has agreed to be the named volunteer for this task).

To promote and implement the Council’s Equality Policy in all aspects of employment and service delivery.

The postholder will have responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s s/he is responsible for or encounters.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Level 3 teaching assistant qualification 
Maths & English level 2 if not already achieved.
Appts with apprentice, employer & provider, observations of workplace as well as gathering evidence.
Undertake self-assessment in last month of apprenticeship. The self-assessment must be submitted to the end point assessor as a source of evidence to prepare for End Point Assessment which will include a showcase portfolio; a project, employer reference & interview about the portfolio and project.
