What will the apprentice be doing?

You will shadow and assist the proprietor and other experienced workers as directed.  Duties will include:

  • To work on site carrying out stonemasonry and related tasks as directed
  • To carry out yard duties as required
  • To complete tasks assigned to you to a high standard
  • To undertake such other duties connected with your role as required

Typical work will include walling, stone facing, stone fixing, stone dressing, pointing and paving. You will develop the range of skills required for this work.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will work towards the Level 2 Stonemason Apprenticeship Standard.

You will work with the employer the majority of the time and then attend York College for block release which will be for 2 weeks at a time and works out as 14 weeks over the year.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

This is a long term position with the intention that you will continue to work in the business upon successful completion of your apprenticeship. You will be offered further training to support your career development and enhance your contribution to the business. This may be further development of your stonemasonry skills and/or in related areas such as operating construction plant or site management. Opportunities to progress within the business will be based upon your own performance.

Things to consider

We are based near Penrith in Cumbria and most of our work is within the county. If you do not live locally you will need to be willing to re-locate to the area - we can provide help to find suitable accommodation if necessary. You will need to be comfortable doing physical work. You will be working outdoors most of the time.

Our business is based near Penrith in Cumbria. From our origins in 2016 as a dry stone walling contractor we have developed to offer a comprehensive service covering stonemasonry, landscaping and associated groundworks. Activities include design and build, rebuild, repairs and restoration. We work on small to large projects for commercial and domestic customers. We have a small but growing team of experienced and trainee workers and believe in developing our own people.
