    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

With the rapid increase in the complexity of today’s trucks – and the technology needed to keep them up and running – first class training for those involved in the vital servicing and maintenance of these vehicles has become more important than ever. The Scania Apprentice Programme gives you the chance to join the select group of specialist technicians working on some of the most modern, sophisticated trucks on the road.

The day to day tasks include:

  • Observing and assisting technicians.
  • Following health and safety procedures.
  • Servicing.
  • MOT’s.
  • All aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair.

Personal qualities

  • A keen interest in heavy vehicles, hard working and well motivated.
  • The apprentice must have excellent communication skills verbal and written.

Qualifications required

  • Minimum of 3 GCSE’s or equivalent (A-C in English and Maths preferable).

Things to consider

Attendance at the Scania Training Centre is usually in two week blocks. While there, you will stay in approved accommodation at the Quality Inn Hotel in Loughborough which includes, amongst other things, full leisure facilities. All travel, living and accommodation expenses while attending training courses will be by your employing Scania Dealer who will also provide books and other necessary equipment for your studies.

About the employer

There has been a Scania depot in Stoke-on-Trent since 1987. It moved to its current site with a purpose built drive through workshop in 1994. During the last, almost 20 years, the depot has considerably expanded the range of services offered and the number of people employed. The depot currently has 23 qualified technicians of which 13 are Master Technicians (the highest level of Scania technical training available).

Training provider

Practical skills and hands-on experience will be gained at the Scania service point you work at, while the training and knowledge you need to support them will come through attending the Scania Training Centre, which is located in Loughborough. Your training begins with a week's induction at the Outward Bound Centre in Aberdovey alongside other Scania Apprentices from around the country. After this your training will take place at the Scania Training Centre with its specialist instructors and dedicated workshop facilities.

On successfully completing your training, which takes a total of three years, you will leave the Scania Training Centre with an Advanced Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy Vehicle), which will include:

  • VCQ Level 2 and 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.
  • Technical Certificate and Diploma.
  • Functional Skills Qualifications in Maths, English and ICT.

You will also have completed four Scania recognised product-training courses, three of which go toward the Scania Master Technician Programme.
