    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The successful candidate will join a team of software developers and learn from the ground up the day-to-day aspects of a software developer role. You will be trained to use development environments such as Microsoft Visual Studio utilising languages such as Visual Basic, C# and Swift.

Reporting to the Head of Development you will be assigned small achievable tasks that will develop your skills and will, over a period of time, expose you to the various techniques and skills required to write quality software applications.

Training will include in-house training, external training course as well as self-learn courses. Combined, these different training threads will provide the successful candidate with a range of skills and experience with which to further their career in software development.

Combined with the hands on training required to write code you will also develop soft skills including telephone and written communication techniques. You will be trained to use our in-house software applications used to manage customer communication as well as managing aspects of our external communication channels such as web sites and social media.

Additionally, the role will also provide a platform for the successful apprentice to acquire a broad range of IT skills covering backup solutions, networking, disaster recovery and the use of IT in a business environment.

Qualifications required

  • GCSE or equivalent in four subjects: maths, English, a science and computer studies, grade C and above (Candidate may have BTEC equivalent)
  • These subjects are exclusive so we would consider an individual with two of the above four but with other grade C or above GCSEs, or equivalents.

Things to consider

The successful candidate will be expected to travel for some training and may have to stay away from home on lengthy training courses (not more than 5 days). For certified training courses there will be an examination which will contribute towards a recognised professional qualification. Work is office based with long exposure to computer based activities but there will occasionally be the need to travel to customer locations. Our office hours are 9.00 to 5.30 but due to our need to access customer systems which are live and used during the day, we are occasionally expected to work outside normal working hours.
