    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The candidate will be fully supported by a qualified member of staff who will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete your programme and gain recognised qualification.

The right candidate will need to be physically fit and have plenty of stamina for this demanding role.

You will be required to carry out duties such as:

  • Building and repairing walls
  • In accordance with construction plans
  • Along with other structures.
  • The successful apprentice will be taught how to lay out structural frameworks for buildings using bricks and mortar.
  • You will also be shown how to use specialist tools and equipment such as operating a cement mixer to prepare mortar and cutting and shaping bricks to fit corners.

The apprentice will need great attention to detail and will learn to use plumb lines and spirit levels to check that the bricks are aligned correctly. During your working day you will be using a range of other specialist tools ranging from hammers and trowels to state-of-the-art power tools.

You will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff, and you must follow health and safety procedures in the workplace at all times, as well as ensuring that all tools are clean and put away correctly.

This is a very exciting yet challenging role for the right candidate.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

You will need to be keen, motivated and enjoy outdoor physical work. Stamina is a vital factor in this role, as you will be required to work indoors and outdoors and you must also be able to work at height.

The successful apprentice must have good coordination skills and have a focused approach to the job in hand. Excellent timekeeping and attendance are also desirable.

You must also have good communication skills as you will need to work as part of a team as well as on your own.

Personal qualities

The successful candidate will need to be physically fit and highly motivated to carry out this exciting yet demanding role. You will have a keen interest in the construction industry working in all kinds of weathers and be willing to work hard to progress in your chosen career.

You will be required to work in a group and on your own, learning various different skills in the construction trade.

Qualifications required

Qualifications required for this role include GCSE’s grades A–E in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

Future prospects

Once you have completed your level 2 qualifications in bricklaying, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the advanced level 3 apprenticeship. This will enable you to develop your skills and experience which will provide greater opportunities at the end of the apprenticeship programme.

About the employer

Lee Mather has been trading for over 8 years.

He started as an apprentice and now works for himself building up his hugely successful company. He has a great eye for detail and takes a great deal of pride in his work.

His work takes him mainly onto new build sites where he does every aspect of brick and block laying on site. Lee also does a lot of other work on other projects large and small.

Lee’s work takes him all over Plymouth and occasionally surrounding areas.

Training provider

The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer#. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
