This is a fantastic opportunity to train, work and develop your horticultural career within a growing organisation.

You will gain experience and learn :

  • Grass cutting, strimming and using blowers
  • Introduction into hedge cutting with hedge trimmers
  • Maintaining flower beds, planting, dead heading and planting
  • Shrub bed maintenance – pruning, , weeding and planting
  • You will also learn to ride and use sit on machines for grass cutting etc.

    What will you be maintaining:

  • Maintenance of public and private green space
  • Housing grounds maintenance
  • Maintenance of commercial estates
  • Horticultural expertise

You will be trained to use ride-on equipment, strimmers and push mowers. In addition you would be expected to assist with any maintenance jobs including painting, fencing and general repairs.

  • You do not need any specific skills but you should be very interested in Horticulture and take pride in your work.
  • Good timekeeping is very important.
  • You should be willing to work in all weather conditions.
  • You will be working in view of the public, so you should be well presented and confident to interact with them and present a good impression of the local community.

Qualifications required

GCSE Grades – Two D’s or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent) essential.

Future prospects

You will be working towards achieving a level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture with future prospects including progressing onto an advanced apprenticeship and increased prospects of a job with the organisation or within the industry.

Things to consider

•This is work where you will be active for a lot of the day, and you could be working outside in all weathers. •You will be 'on view' whilst you work and may be spoken to by the public. •There are limited to no transport links locally so own transport is essential. •If you do not live locally please state how you will get to work. From April 1st 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum Wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.

Training provider

You will be trained in the workplace alongside your usual duties and you will be expected to attend college one day a week or on a block release basis.  

You will work towards achieving a level 2 apprenticeship in Horticulture including work based and knowledge components, an employee rights and responsibilities qualification, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and if required Functional Skills.
