    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

You will work four days a week at your business as an administration assistant, gaining your practical experience. You will then attend college once a week to gain your apprenticeship qualification. Tasks involved may include answering the phone, dealing with customer queries/orders, filing, arranging meetings and manning reception.

Previous work experience in an office environment is helpful as is customer service experience. A genuine interest in wanting to work in an office is essential.

Attention to detail, confident and polite phone manner, good customer service skills, good time keeping, problem solver, professionally presented and enthusiastic.


Qualifications required

No qualifications are required for this apprenticeship. Functional skills are covered as part of the apprenticeship.


Future prospects

Learners can use this qualification to go into various office-based roles. You can progress onto the Level 3 apprenticeship and work your way up to Office Manager level which would be a management role often with team leader status. This qualification should give you transferable skills that will not limit you to one sector.

Things to consider

Working in a business can be busy and require you to manage multiple tasks at one time. You may be dealing with customer problems or complaints. You may have to complete tasks under tight time pressures. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

Intermediate apprentices will attend day release.
