AVW Fabrications are looking for a new member of staff to join their hard working team as a Fabrication and Welding Apprentice.

This position would involve learning how to use a range of different welding and fabricating techniques in order to be able to manufacture components to customer drawings.

The vacancies are for full time Apprenticeships and combine the opportunity of paid work with a formal training program, where attendance at college on a day release basis will be included and assessment of the skills will take place via visits from a college assessor.

We are looking for an individual who takes pride in their work, is well organised and is keen to learn.

This apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to compliment the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with knowledge gained.

You will learn all aspects of Laser cutting, Laser Punch combination, folding, fabrication, based in Whetstone you will be part of a small friendly shop floor team.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • An interest in engineering is essential.
  • Physically fit to move and lift sheet metal and a willingness to be on your feet all day and/or standing for long periods.
  • Some experience in working with simple tools would be desirable as would an ability to understand technical drawings

Qualifications required

  • GCSE grades C (or equivalent) in English and Maths are essential. Design & Technology and/or Engineering qualification desirable

Things to consider

This job requires physical strength and endurance due to lifting and moving sheet metal and spending long periods of time on your feet. Working in a workshop environment can be a hot and dirty job so applicants must be willing to get their hands dirty. Interview, closing date possible start dates are only a guideline as interviews for this position will be held on an ongoing basis, therefore the start date could alter as the vacancy will close as soon as a successful candidate is selected. As of the 1st October 2016 the Apprentice NMW is £3.40 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

AVW Fabrications Limited is a family run business which was established in 1988 and is now located in Whetstone, on the outskirts of Leicester, following a recent move to larger premises to accommodate our growing customer base. We specialise in laser cutting and sheet metal fabrication and pride ourselves on excellent customer service. Having recently purchased three brand new state of the art Amada machines, including a 3.5kw CO2 laser, CNC Punch Laser Combination machine and 4m 170T Press Brake, we can laser cut up to of 20mm Mild Steel, 10mm Stainless Steel, 8mm Aluminium, 3mm Galvanised Steel and 3mm Zintec using the latest technology and fold up to a length of 4 metres. Training provider

The Apprenticeship will be achieved through assessments with a Leicester College Assessor in the workplace. There may be some training required at one of the college campuses.
