    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Aspire Sports & Cultural Trust are looking to recruit 2 Apprentice Recreation Officer’s to work within the centre duties will include:
 

  • To assist in the efficient operation of facilities and activities within Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust in order to promote business and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • To assist in ensuring that activities are controlled effectively in line with Health and Safety guidelines and legislation to ensure a safe environment at all times.
  • Supervise and control the conduct of users in the Leisure Centre to ensure safety at all times.
  • Supervision and control of the swimming pools, its surrounds and changing areas.
  • To adhere to organisational procedures and systems in order to deliver a consistent service in a safe environment, with an ultimate goal of achieving customer satisfaction and repeat visits.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure continuity of high standards and service at all times.
  • To promote the Leisure Centre and encourage use of its facilities and services to the public, clubs and outside organisations.
  • Assist with the cleaning and presentation of the Leisure Centre as directed by Management, to ensure a clean and tidy building, to include the swimming pool and it’s surrounds.
  • To carry out and record checks of an operational or safety nature, as directed by Management, reporting any faults immediately to the line manager.
  • Assemble and dismantle equipment throughout the Leisure Centre for which adequate training has been given or the relevant qualification has been obtained.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time within the responsibility level set out in the job description.
  • To work on a shift rota basis covering days, evenings and weekend working.
  • All duties must be carried out with due regard to Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Health and Safety policy.
  • The nature of the duties are not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder will be required to complete such duties as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grade of the post.
  • Maintain record management systems in accordance with Aspire policy.
  • To take part in meetings as a team member and actively share experience, knowledge and solutions with colleagues.
  • Exercise absolute integrity in respect of confidential matters.
  • Carry out the duties and responsibility of the post in accordance with Aspires policies, values and legislative requirements at all times.
  • Name badges will be provided and must be worn at all times.

As an Apprentice you will be included on a Diploma in Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being Operational Services Qualification.
Your Qualification will be delivered by an Award Winning Training Provider who will support your learning and development throughout your Apprenticeship. This will involve a Vocational Learning Advisor coming to visit you on a regular basis to deliver the training and guide you through your Apprenticeship.

 

 

 


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Be able to swim 50m in 55 seconds, be able to get out of a swimming pool unaided, be able to get to a pool depth of 3m to pick a mannequin off the pool bottom from surface dive.

Personal qualities

  • Ability to communicate positively with members of the public, clubs and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of customer care and its’ importance in a leisure environment.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and ability to work in a team environment.

Qualifications required

  • No formal qualifications are required.
  • Successful candidates will be provided with full training, as well as a nationally recognised lifeguarding qualification (NPLQ)

Future prospects

Whilst a permanent position cannot be guaranteed do have a number of zero hour Recreation Officer contracts in the business which may be available.

Things to consider

You must have a good standard of fitness and be a competent swimmer. You will be based at GL1 but flexibility is essential, if required, to carry out work at any other sites operated by Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust within the Recreation Officer’s role. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
