    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

A nursery assistant plays an important role in assisting in the care of young children. They plan and organise both fun and educational activities and take care of children’s personal needs. As an apprentice you will undertake the following duties supervised by another qualified assistant;

  • Supervising children play time
  • Engaging children in learning and play activities
  • Keeping and updating records
  • Working with team members
  • Maintaining a high standard of operation
  • Attending staff meetings​

A desire to work with children and be able to make the children feel comfortable and secure in the nursery environment.

Qualifications required

Ideally candidates will have GCSEs grade A*-C or equivalent qualifications.

Future prospects

Progression onto the Level 3 Early Years Advanced Apprenticeship to be considered upon successful completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship programme in addition to GCSE grades A-C in Maths and English.

Things to consider

Individuals who already have a Level 4 qualification are now eligible for a Level 5 or above Higher Apprenticeship only. They are not eligible for funding for an Intermediate Level, Advanced Level or Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship.

Rupert’s was established in 1988 by two qualified and experienced teachers. Since then, it has been providing care and support to generations of families in the Brooklands/Sale area. Our accommodation is on the ground floor only, ensuring ease of access, with free flow play encouraged throughout the inside rooms. We have quiet sleep rooms and soft play activities for the babies and toddlers, along with purpose-built craft bays and pre-school impressive play area and garden. The exciting and safe adventure playground gives ample opportunity to climb, classroom, with excellent ‘see-through’ vision of floor to ceiling windows throughout. Externally, we have an run, cycle, play games and explore imaginatively in the castle and log cabin or country cottage. In summer months the secure and shady lawns offer picnic areas, a place for the paddling pools and comfortable landings for those just up on their feet. We also have excellent sand and water play facilities.

Training provider

Training will be provided in order to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People's Workforce. Functional Skills Level 1 Maths, English and ICT are completed with the Apprentice if a prior GCSE grade A*-C or equivalent has not already been achieved.
