As a nursery assistant you will play an important role in assisting in the care of young children. You will join the team to plan and organise both fun and educational activities and take care of children’s personal needs.

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Intermediate Level Apprenticeship
A nursery assistant plays an important role in assisting in the care of young children. They plan and organise both fun and educational activities and take care of children’s personal needs. As an apprentice you will undertake the following duties supervised by another qualified assistant;
- Supervising children play time
- Engaging children in learning and play activities
- Keeping and updating records
- Working with team members
- Maintaining a high standard of operation
- Attending staff meetings
Requirements and prospects
Ability to liaise effectively with others involved in working with children
Ability and willingness to acquire knowledge of relevant legislation and procedures
To communicate in a helpful and sensitive manner with children and adults
The ability to record information accurately
Team working skills
A desire to work with children and be able to make the children feel comfortable and secure in the nursery environment.
Ideally candidates will have GCSEs grade A*-C or equivalent qualifications.
Things to consider
About the employer
Training will be provided in order to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People's Workforce. Functional Skills Level 1 Maths, English and ICT are completed with the Apprentice if a prior GCSE grade A*-C or equivalent has not already been achieved.
