Wages explained
The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Durrant House Hotel for a keen Apprentice Chef to join the friendly team at our busy hotel and to be trained under the supervision of our highly experienced professional chef.

  • You will perform many basic tasks of food preparation to start with and have a natural flair for cooking
  • To prepare and cook food to the high standard required by the Chef
  • To assist the Chef with the stock management of all ingredients
  • To help with unloading and safe storage of ingredients and to prepare raw ingredients to a high standard
  • To assist with the washing of all pots, crockery, cutlery, utensils and pans to a high standard, ensuring they are stored in the correct place and in a tidy manner
  • To help cater for events held at the hotel such as weddings, functions, parties, etc.
  • Ensure food preparation and control meets requirements in respect of COSHH, Food Safety and Health & Safety regulations are adhered to and any incidents are reported in line with procedures
  • You will also be required to keep up-to-date with all Apprenticeship work, and to have regular meetings (every 4-6 weeks) with the Vocational Learning Advisor to discuss your work

As an Apprentice you will be included on a Professional Cookery Qualification. Your Qualification will be delivered by an Award Winning Training Provider who will support your learning and development throughout your Apprenticeship. This will involve a Vocational Learning Advisor coming to visit you on a regular basis to deliver the training and guide you through your Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

You will work on a shift pattern and your hours will include working early morning on breakfasts, evenings and weekends to the requirements of the workplace. This vacancy is for a minimum of 30 hours but this is a busy hotel and there is the opportunity to work many more hours, your wage will be pro-rated according to total hours worked. About the employer

We are a busy all season 125 bedroom hotel located in Bideford. We have bookings from both private and coach guests. We offer conference, banqueting and meeting facilities. We also hold dance weekends and private functions. We have the Olive Tree Restaurant and Appledore Bar. Food is served in the hotel from 12.00 noon until 21:30pm. We also have a Spa offering beauty treatments to both residents and non-residents of the hotel.
