Wages explained
The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.40 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.55 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £6.95 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Full in house training will be given for this varied job role.  Prior knowledge of Solid Works and / or AutoCad or any other CAD programmes would be advantageous.  Basic knowledge of word and excel is essential. The role would include but not limited to drawing sheet metal work components from assembly drawings, modelling full assembled products, producing general arrangement drawings for air conditioning and / or heating systems.  Day to day administration of various project files, ordering materials and producing job sheets for the factory. Assisting the QA (Quality Assurance) with visual checks of components and finished goods being produced.

During the early part of the apprenticeship the successful person would spend a proportion of their time assisting with practical works with in the various different in-house testing laboratories to gain an understanding of the products that they will be CAD drawing and project engineering.

Working in an open plan office area of approx 20 people, 4 of which doing similar job.

Key responsibilities are accuracy of work given, as an apprentice all work will be checked by other more experienced staff.

Daily contact will be with both design managers and sales.

The position of Apprentice Projects Design Engineer will after some time involve a lot of time working at a computer in a pleasant office environment.

  • Good knowledge and ability of CAD.
  • Excel and Word would be advantageous.
  • First year would be varied works 50% practical (test labs).
  • 50% office (CAD / project engineering).

Qualifications required

A Level, Pass Grade or above or equivalent qualifications in at least one of the following listed subjects.

BTEC level 2 or preferably level 3 Advanced Diploma in Engineering Manufacturing also highly desired.

  • Information Technology.
  • Science (ideally ‘Physics’).
  • Craft Design & Technology.
  • Computer Aided Drawing (CAD).

Future prospects

The right candidate may over time and having gained experience in assisting with the day to day processing of CAD drawings, administration and management of projects (order processing) become a valued member of Frenger’s Project Design Engineering Management department working on major projects with significantly enhanced salary potential.

Things to consider

From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
