    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The Apprentice will work towards the Level 2 qualification in Professional Cookery.

 

The duties will include:

  • Assisting the senior chef
  • Ensuring the workstation is clean
  • Unloading stock and stock rotation
  • Helping with the daily running of the kitchen
  • Preparing cooking and presenting starters mains and desserts from scratch
  • Following health and safety guidelines

  • Someone who can take instruction with excellent listening skills
  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance
  • Ability to work within a team, but has the initiative to work unsupervised
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen environment

Personal qualities

  • The role will appeal to someone who is extremely passionate about becoming a chef
  • The successful apprentice will have high levels of personal hygiene and be extremely reliable

Qualifications required

Good understanding of numeracy and literacy.

GCSE qualifications at grade C or above in English and maths or the ability to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills

Future prospects

Further training and/or full time employment will be on the table for the right candidate based on performance during the Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Must be 18 as it is a licenced premises. The Ugly Duckling is on a bus route but due to its location and the hours of work having your own transport would be an advantage. Due to the nature of the role, the Apprentice will be required to work a variety of shift patterns to include evening, weekends, and bank holidays. From 1st October 2016 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From April 2017 this rises to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

About the employer

Just north of Telford on the A442; The Ugly Duckling is divided up a number of clear areas with games room at one end of the main bar. A large conservatory can be used as a function room. The garden is large with a fair number of table and benches available and a number of apparatus for children to keep themselves amused on. The bus service passing the pub will stop to drop off and pick up on request.
