As part of this role you will be required to study towards the Engineering Technician (Technical Support Technician) Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard at Colchester Institute.  

The Apprentice will have many responsibilities:

  • Responsibility to provide technical support of Ransomes Jacobsen products to our dealers, distributors and customers
  • Work with all departments within Customer Care to gain understanding of aftersales business
  • Responsibility for accurate data management to be able to monitor and track aftersales performance
  • Track field problems and work with Engineering and / or manufacturing personnel to implement corrective action to the field

You will work within the Customer Care Department/Service Department.

Day-to-day Contact / Reporting to: Glen Forsdick.

The company is continuing to develop their apprenticeship programme and are looking to recruit apprentices for the Customer Care Dept. to work closely and develop skills within Technical Support.

The role will include the following:

  • Learning and understanding the technical aspects of the products to be able to support our dealers and customers with fault diagnosis, parts identification and training requirements
  • Investigate field reports of product quality and reliability issues and work with manufacturing, engineering and quality etc on understanding the root cause and possible solutions
  • Hands on skills to effectively work on product mechanically as well as hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic circuits
  • Provide clear communication to our customers, distributors and dealers for technical support related enquiries
  • Working in Sales / CPO workshop to achieve skills required to repair, refurbish and prepare product for sale
  • Working in Service Parts department to obtain understanding of spare parts business
  • Prepare documentation for work instructions in digital and / or video format

Desired qualifications

  • Essential: Minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 including maths, English and a Science related subject
  • All candidates will be required to complete Colchester Institute's mandatory initial assessment process before being put forward to the company. This will consist of online assessments and interview with the relevant department

Future prospects

  • Students will be expected to complete a minimum of 36 - 42 months training achieving Level 3 qualification
  • Successful completion of the course / qualification could lead to a permanent role working within Product Support

Pay and Working Hours:

  • First Year Apprentices will be paid £6.00 per hour which is above the Government recommended first year rate. Weekly wage would be £224 for 37 hr week, paid monthly as 1/12 of annual salary (£11,544)
  • Apprentices under 18 will work the following pattern: Monday - Thursday = 8.30am - 4.30pm, Friday = 8.30am - 4.00pm
  • Apprentices over 18 will work the following pattern: Week 1 Monday - Thursday = 8.15am - 5.00pm, Friday = 8.15am - 4.45pm. Week 2 Monday - Thursday = 8.15 - 5.00pm, Friday = Off


  • You will be required to attend Colchester Institute 2 days per week for the 1st year of your apprenticeship and 1 day per week thereafter
  • A monthly allowance is paid alongside salary for training/travel
  • There is no working away, and the shift is detailed above
  • All PPE is provided including safety footwear where required


  • Colchester Institute - Apprenticeship Team manage the applications to this role and you will be required to complete our initial assessment process before your application gets sent onto the employer
