As an employee of FBFL fulfilling the job role of Apprentice Fitter you will provide support to the underground mining operations as part of the machine maintenance team, working under direction of the other fitters to ensure the mobile plant critical to the mining operations remains in a safe and well-maintained condition. You will perform repairs and preventive maintenance to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air operated equipment - this includes light vehicles.

The Apprentice will be given the opportunity to undertake an appropriate NVQ level 3 qualification to advance their career to become a Heavy Plant Fitter in future. The Apprentice will also be given the opportunity to attend other internal and external training courses.  

As an Apprentice Fitter you will follow instructions given to you by other members of the fitting team in order to learn your chosen trade. You will be fully trained and undertake tasks as deemed competent to do so – overtime you will gradually be introduced to tasks of increasing complexity. You will work on repairs, servicing, maintenance, and diagnosing issues, of equipment required for operation of the mine. Your duties will include:

• To adhere to all safety management procedures and policies in place at Milldam

• To comply with instructions given to you by your supervisors

• To attend technical college part-time to gain your level 3 qualification

• To undertake duties in the fitting shop and underground as required

• Service, maintain and repair a wide range of mining related equipment

• To learn how to check, service and undertake basic fault finding activities - You will analyse problems or defects, identify any repairs issues and undertake maintenance tasks

• To remove, dismantle, repair, assemble and refit a plethora of components

• You will be responsible for ensuring you have the right tools and resources such as oils, lubricants, and parts for each task

•  Any other duties, as required


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Full UK driving license desirable not essential
  • Good IT skills
  • Preferable knowledge and or use of heavy mobile plant
  • A strong safety orientated work ethic
  • Strong independent and team working skills
  • Determination to succeed and the ability to prioritise workload

Personal qualities

  • Hardworking and dedicated to the job
  • Preferably hands-on approach to work
  • Able to get on with older more experienced personnel and accept instructions as given
  • A minimum age of 18 years old due to insurance
  • A level of fitness capable to walk up steeply inclined uneven roadways
  • Ability to lift 25kgs regularly and capable of manual labour

Desired qualifications

  • Preferably A*-C/9-4 level GCSEs or equivalent in Maths, English, and Science
  • Preferably completed A-levels

Future prospects

Things to consider

  • Can be hard manual work
  • May be required to work different shifts
  • There are good opportunities for overtime on Saturday mornings as well as shift allowance for unsociable hours. There are guaranteed holidays over Christmas and other bank holiday periods
  • The successful applicant will need to attend Chesterfield College as part of the day release element.

About the employer

Fluorsid British Fluorspar Ltd (FBFL) operates Milldam Mine in the Peak District extracting fluorspar ore from a sub-vertical hydrothermal vein hosted in limestones. The ore is extracted using sub-level open stoping with a trackless fleet of mobile plant from 7 to 25 tonnes in size supported by smaller auxiliary and light vehicles.

Ore from Milldam is transported to Cavendish Mill for processing into Acid Grade fluorspar which is sold into the global chemical market as the raw material for fluoro-chemical products.

An apprenticeship allows you to earn a wage, gain valuable work experience and industry specific competence. You will be expected to work towards the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Tech Standard (Mechanical Pathway), with support from your employer and Learning Unlimited.

As part of your apprenticeship and dependent on your prior attainment you may be required to complete maths, and English Functional Skills which is an integral part of your apprenticeship.  Upon successful completion you will be awarded an additional certificates of recognition for these qualifications.
