Your role will cover the following;
Learn the different procedures of food preparation
Prepare ingredients for various dishes served
Become confident and familiar with the different equipment in a commercial kitchen learning how to use the equipment in a safe manner
Working alongside our chef and assisting in all ways
Learning how to handle and store food correctly
Food hygiene
Stock rotation
Ordering food
Be creative with food and creating your own dishes

We are willing to pay above the minimum apprentice wage for example:
16-17 years old - £5.25
18-20 years old - £7.00
21-22 years old - £8.50
23 + years - £9.00
In addition to your hourly rate, you will be entitled to holiday pay. Holiday pay equates to just over 12% of your hourly rate. Holiday pay is accumulated and taken when required.
Working weekends - here at The Jockey we have implemented a successful rota which mean that you will work one weekend on, and the other weekend is yours to enjoy!
Long Shifts – our kitchen opening hours are as follows:
Mon-Sat 12-2pm and 6-9pm
Sunday 12-3pm only
Our Kitchen Team generally start their lunch shift at 9:30/10am and are finished by 3pm. The evening shifts start at 5:30pm and finish around 10pm depending on bookings. Sunday shifts start at 10:30am and finish by 4pm.
Working Bank Holidays – when working public bank holidays, we pay double time however we will NEVER force any member of our Team to work Christmas Eve (evening), Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve (evening) or New Year’s Day. We believe that everyone should enjoy their Christmas and New Year as they choose.
Ruins your clothes – yes, working in the kitchen will create a smell of food, oil/fryers. We do not expect you to ruin your own clothes and will therefore provide you with several Jockey tops and professional kitchen trousers if preferred. Alternatively, you can supply, and wear leggings or jeans and we will also require for you to supply your own footwear which should be comfortable and safe to wear in the kitchen i.e., nonslip.

There will be an opportunity to progress onto the Senior Production Chef Advanced Apprenticeship whilst being a permanent member of our Jockey Team

Things to consider

Entry Requirements

You will need to be 16 + years and not taking part in full-time education elsewhere

You will be working at least 30 hours per week here at The Horse and Jockey

Resident in England – ideally living locally to the pub and either have your own transport or have a family member/friend who you can rely on to drop and collect you, local transport can be very unpredictable here in the village. We will require for you to work split shifts i.e., lunch and evening shifts on the same day so living locally will enable you to have time at home in between shifts.

Functional skills Maths and English at level 1 will be included on this course if you haven’t already obtained whilst at school.

Additional benefits:

Share of customer TIPS, these are accumulated monthly and shared out amongst all Team Members depending on hours worked, the more hours worked the bigger % of tips received.

Meal allowance – when working the lunch shift, you will be entitled to a small meal for FREE.

Drinks – soft drinks to include coke or lemonade are provided for FREE whilst working.

About the employer

The Horse and Jockey Binegar is a community lead, local village pub. We offer a classic home-cooked pub menu along with an additional regular Jockey Special’s Menu. In addition, we serve a traditional Sunday Roast on Sundays. During the past months, we have continued to experience a high volume of business and therefore looking to expand our Jockey Team
