Main Tasks / Responsibilities / Authorities:

  • Under supervision and guidance, learn to service, repair and diagnose Volvo construction equipment, whilst maintaining safe working practices throughout
  • To follow any reasonable work instructions or requests from Line Management or a nominated responsible person/Mentor
  • Maintain a sufficient personal toolkit to enable you to carry out the job effectively
  • In regards to company tooling (including but not limited to laptops, electronic timesheets, specialist tooling and lifting equipment), ensure defects are reported, use is in line with current test periods and in line with instructions/training
  • Accurate completion of systems/paperwork
  • Complete electronic timesheet in ‘real time’ providing comprehensive details of the work undertaken
  • To order parts for your work as necessary and to return parts in a clean condition and at the time of job completion, to aid the efficient invoicing of workshop jobs
  • To ensure a smart and professional appearance, wearing appropriate SMT supplied work wear and PPE, and to ensure housekeeping in your work area is of the highest standard
  • Flexibility to work overtime as and when necessary, in line with internal policies and working time legislation
  • To help out with on-site repairs in line with internal policies
  • To attend apprenticeship training and additional relevant product/systems training courses, staying away from home where necessary, to ensure a high standard of competence is achieved
  • Work in accordance with SMT GB standards of health, safety, quality and environmental care
  • Any other duties that may be reasonably requested by your manager

Desired qualifications

GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English.


  • GCSE (or equivalent) in a science and Design & Technology (STEM Subjects)

Future prospects

After 4 years become a fully qualified field or workshop-based engineer working in various locations from a dedicated van kitted out with all the required tools if field based. Working in your dedicated local depot if workshop based.

Level 3 Land-based Service Engineer apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths, English, and ICT (if required)

Reaseheath Training will be the apprenticeship provider for this Level 3 apprenticeship.

The employer will give guidance and support throughout

Off-the-job training must make up at least 20% of the apprentice’s contracted hours, over the total duration of the apprentice’s planned training period.
