Marriott Forest of Arden are looking to recruit a Greenkeeping Apprentice to assist with in the day-to-day set up and maintenance of the course, all the related practice facilities and planted areas. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in golf and greenkeeping.
The role is varied and duties would include: mowing the greens and fairways, topdressing and treating turf, seeding, renovating and maintaining bunkers, maintaining practice area, servicing machinery and general maintenance work.
The ideal candidate would be local to the area, keen to learn, hardworking, reliable and have some interest or experience in greenkeeping. Being a golfer would be advantageous although not essential.
You will work 40 hours per week between 5.30am (earliest start) and 2.30pm (latest finish), Monday to Friday with every other weekend work required this will be 4 hours Saturday 4 hours Sunday with a day off in lieu the following week. Please indicate shift patterns and breaks where applicable. Times may vary depending on the season but this will be discussed at interview.
You will be paid a minimum of £9.66 per hour. This will reviewed throughout the programme and may increase depending on performance and progression.
Training will be provided in the workplace where you will work towards a Level 2 Golf Greenkeeping Apprenticeship.
Requirements and prospects
The ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative.
The ideal candidate must be keen to learn, enjoy a challenge, be honest, hardworking, reliable and personable and have a keen interest in golf & greenkeeping.
Entry requirements will be determined by individual employers but typically potential apprentices will have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades A-D (including Maths and English and Science) or other equivalent vocational qualifications.
Employers, who recruit apprentices without the above levels of qualifications, will have to ensure they achieve level 1 in English and maths as part of their Apprenticeship.
Candidates will be screened as part of the recruitment process and must be able to work at Level 1 in Functional Skills (Maths and English) in order to undertake this Apprenticeship.
Please note that candidates with any qualification at the same level or above in the same subject are ineligible for funding and will not be considered for an Apprenticeship.

Training will be provided in the workplace through Myerscough College where you will work towards the Golf Greenkeeper Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.
The Apprenticeship is made up of a number of different nationally recognised qualifications which are as follows:
- City & Guilds Certificate in Golf Greenkeeping
- The qualification is made up of a number of mandatory units designed to have maximum relevance to the job & integrate with day to day responsibilities.
- End assessment, conducted by an independent assessor, which include:
- Knowledge test (30% of grading)
- Personal statement & portfolio of evidence (20% of grading)
- Course walk & practical end assessment 5 – 6 hours (50% of grading)
- There will be 3 levels of achievement: Pass, Merit & Distinction.
This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA. Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.
