You would be part of a well-established existing nursing team. Your main duties will be to provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to all of our Specialist Clinicians and Dental Hygienists.

Duties include:

  • Clean and sterilise all equipment and working surfaces to the required standards at the end of each session
  • Prepare the necessary materials and instruments
  • Liaise with reception over necessary future appointments for each patient
  • Provide clinical assistance to the dentist [hygienist/therapist] while treating the patient, acting under his/her supervision
  • Interpret the needs of patients and dentists [hygienists/therapists] and deal with them promptly and efficiently
  • Assist the dentist [hygienist/therapist] in the completion of patient records
  • Act as first point of contact within surgery so must be courteous, professional, and efficient
  • Develop digital x-rays
  • Ensure adequate stocks of materials are within the surgery


  • Use all equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and ensure that they are maintained regularly and in good working order
  • Observe patient confidentiality at all times
  • Handle all substances in accordance with health and safety policies
  • Be familiar and comply with all health and safety rules and guidance, PPE, COSHH and infection control waste disposal
  • Complete laboratory request forms ,keep records of work sent received and fitted. Ensure correct laboratory work available for each clinic as necessary
  • Adhere to GDC standards at all times
  • Adhere to HTM01-05 guidelines in relation to cross infection
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings
  • Other duties as necessary for the efficient operation of the practice
  • Undergo training as it may be required to develop your skills and abilities
  • Attend refresher and update training for medical emergencies and CPR
  • Act in accordance with the practice rules and code of conduct

Desired qualifications

  • GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) in maths and English
  • GCSE grade C/4 in a Science subject
  • Functional Skills level 2 in maths and English are accepted
  • A-levels in maths or English grade E or above (or equivalent) will be accepted

Future prospects

With experience you may be able to move into jobs like team manager, team leader or dental practice manager.

With further training you could become a dental therapist, helping a dentist carry out the more routine dentistry work. You could also become a dental hygienist, helping people to look after their teeth and gums.

You might decide to train as an orthodontic therapist helping dentists to improve the look and position of a patient's teeth.

We have an exciting opportunity for two Apprentice Dental Nurses to join our friendly and busy Private dental practice in Cambridge. Based over 2 sites close to Addenbrookes Hospital and at Copley Hill Business Park near Babraham, we are a well-established practice with a very friendly team. We would love you to join us as an Apprentice Dental Nurse within our existing nursing team. Your main duties will be to provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to all of our Practice Clinicians including Dental Hygienists.

Our nursing team has a wealth of experience to support you on your journey to become a fully qualified dental nurse in order to register with the General Dental Council. You will be enrolled on an accredited training programme to achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, which will fully compliment the internal/on the job training that will be provided for you. Following the successful completion of your training, there will be the opportunity to join the team as a permanent member of staff.
