Duties the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician will carry out will include:

  • Operate in a safe working manner by adhering to health and safety legislation, codes of practice and applying safe working practices
  • Contribute to the application of design, planning, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, fault diagnosis, service and repair and electrical and electronic techniques on fire, emergency and security systems
  • Operate a range of ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information in applications and environments applicable to the role
  • Take responsibility for own work and safety and welfare of others. Oversee and organise the programme of work and work environment.
  • Carry out work and manage resources in an environmentally friendly manner
  • You will be working alongside qualified Fire & Security Engineers, who will teach both the practical and theoretical applications needed to become a qualified Engineer
  • You will start off with basic tasks, such as, handling tools, fetching material and assisting with first fix works example, but as time goes by, will undertake more complex tasks and will at times be set independent work to complete, which will be checked by senior staff onsite
  • The apprentice will be expected to work with our Training provider (JTL) to document and record all work-based activities to evidence their progression towards gaining the technical qualifications required according to provided Fire, Security or combined Fire & Security pathways. The apprentice will also attend a training center in Birmingham 2 days every month to undertake course work set by the Training provider

Once you have completed your Apprenticeship and have qualified as a Fire & Security Engineer you will be experienced in the following areas:

  • Qualifications in BTEC Level 3 in Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Technician Contribute to the application of design, planning, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, fault diagnosis, service and repair and electrical and electronic techniques on fire, emergency and security systems
  • Installation and testing techniques for electrical and electronic components, equipment and control systems for fire, emergency and security systems
  • Fundamental principles and quality processes associated with industry/company codes of practices
  • Fundamental design criteria, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire, emergency, security systems and components
  • How to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive data/information electronically in a digital form across a range of ICT applications (e.g. personal computers, digital transmission over IP, email, mobile communication technology)
  • Compliance to environmental legislation and the impact of processes and technologies associated with fire, emergency and security systems
  • Principles of high-quality customer service and the needs of others
  • Apply health & safety and environmental legislation working practices

Knowledge and skills are important and the training is demanding.

Skills and Experience:

  • Be able to demonstrate practical aptitude
  • A keen an eager approach to learning
  • A driving licence would be preferred, although having transport to pick up points and the training centre in Birmingham is essential
  • Cannot be colour blind test, so will need to take a test at the Optician to evidence this
  • Will be expected to purchase basic tools when you start the Apprenticeship

Future prospects

  • By the end of this apprenticeship the candidate will have satisfied the requirements for registration as EngTech by the Engineering Council
  • The advertised Apprentice wage will increase yearly or upon completion of progressive stages. After initially qualifying, you could go on to supervisory roles, senior management positions or even running your own business

The JTL Fire, Emergency and Security Systems apprenticeship is an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3, lasting approximately three years.

As a JTL apprentice you'll be in full time employment with a local company receiving a good wage from day one. You'll spend time learning your trade by gaining hands-on-experience working on-site with your employer, as well as undertaking online assessments and attending a
JTL approved college or training centre to learn the theoretical knowledge you
will need.

For the Advanced Apprenticeship, the standard reflects a higher level of competence and
knowledge. For Fire, Emergency & Security Technicians, the competence and
knowledge elements are combined in a level 3 Qualification

Other qualifications and elements covered include:

  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
