  • Job Purpose: With mentoring support, to obtain knowledge in and be able to carry out activities across all sections of the business in support of testing and testing related activities to meet with client requirements and in accordance with the CFR Quality System.
  • The Test engineer role is a fundamental part of the business and essentially delivers the day to day core activities of fire testing for business.
  • A successful apprentice will have been involved in all areas of the business from the admin and technician support roles to the test engineer activities.
  • Upon completion of the apprenticeship, it is expected that the apprentice will take a role as Test Engineer within CFR.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Customer Support

  • Liaison with clients to obtain information regarding their test products at various stages in the testing process.
  • Liaison with clients to agree test dates for future testing requirements.
  • Maintenance of the CFR test schedule and communicating this with the testing team.
  • Maintenance of the WIP database.
  • Creation, and maintenance of test folders throughout the life cycle of the test.

 

Business Support

  • Procurement activities including raising purchase orders and stock checking.
  • Administration of calibration activities, liaising with external calibration suppliers, arranging for the dispatch and receipt of calibrated equipment.
  • Carrying out Health and Safety checks on site, including but not limited to Fire Alarm Call Point Checks, Emergency Lighting Checks, all keeping records up to date.
  • Internal Auditing.

 

Test Support

  • Working with the Construction team to ensure that all test

preparations and builds are completed to specification and on time.

 

  • Responsibility for the clear up of burnt remains, engaging with the rest of the team to for support when required.

 

  • Fork lift truck driving and Gantry Crane use.

 

Test Engineer

  • Liaising with clients to ensure that their requirements are fully met and all required information and components have been received prior to test.

 

  • Working with the team to ensure that all test preparations, testing and test reports are completed to specification and on time.

 

  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with the QFR QA system and BS EN ISO 17025.

 

  • Assisting with the installation of the clients product to be tested.

 

  • Fitting instrumentation, measuring and checking the products that are to be tested.

 

  • Setting up and operating the test furnaces.

 

  • Conducting tests in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate test standard and approved procedures. Making observations, taking measurements and records data during and after the fire resistance test.

 

  • Data processing, preparation of AutoCAD technical drawings and test reports following the requirements of our quality manual and the test standard.

 

General

  • Additional tasks in a variety of environments as required in support of the operation of the laboratory. These might be in areas such as safety, equipment maintenance, calibration, and accreditation of laboratory.

 

  • Attend training where appropriate to develop relevant knowledge and skills.

 

  • Act in a cooperative and collaborative manner with other colleagues.

 

  • Maintaining a safe working environment.

Future prospects

The hierarchy within CFR is very flat but there are opportunities to progress to a Senior Test Engineer.

 

CFR is likely to expand in the next few years so there will be opportunities to develop a broader range of technical and project skills also.

Working in a purpose-built venue based in Pampisford near Cambridge, where the Company will train you to become a competent Engineering Technician over a 4-year period.

 

It will involve attending college during term time. In year 1, day release is 3 days in-college and with regular work-based assessments conducted by the College Assessor. In Years 2 and 3, day release is one day in-college.

 

On the job training whilst in the work place across all sectors of the business.

All apprentices will be required to achieve as a minimum:

  • An employer approved Level 2 Foundation Competence qualification
  • An employer approved Level 3 Development Competence qualification
  • An employer approved Level 3 Development Technical Knowledge qualification
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking end point assessment
