The successful candidate will operate and programme CNC machines. Various tasks will be given initially to help you grow within the role. The CNC machinist will learn how to programme and operate CNC machines. You will be trained on CAM works system too. 

Duties will include

  • Read engineering drawings
  • Work on your own initiative
  • Operate a variety of large CNC machines

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Any engineering experience would be beneficial along with an excellent grade in maths GCSE.

Personal qualities

  • We are looking for someone who can be flexible with working hours (days/afters) and someone who has an appetite to learn. You will need to be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Desired qualifications

A minimum of three GCSEs at grade 5 (or C) or above or equivalent, including mathematics, English and science, technology, or engineering-related subject.

Applicants are required to successfully complete the AMRC and employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme. 


Future prospects

  • Completion of this apprenticeship is just the start of your career and can open the door to many more opportunities, such as Engineering Management and Project Engineering positions across a range of sectors.

Things to consider

  • During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. 
  • One Friday per month you will return to your workplace. 
  • After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study.  
  • The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Hallam Castings is a long-established UK aluminium die casting specialist manufacturer also offering a wide range of design-for-manufacture and prototyping services. Hallam can design components as aluminium castings, extrusions, injection mouldings or fabrications using Solidworks Professional CAD software. Hallam also specialises in mould tool and pattern design.  CAD models can be converted to resin, silicon, polymer or metal prototypes quickly and cheaply.
