After one month you will:

  • Have a general understanding of the responsibilities of the Council, the role of Officers and Members and how decisions are made and able to direct incoming calls appropriately
  • Have a basic understanding of the basis of Council Tax
  • Process data within the teams relating to income generation, processing payments and amend data based on external sources

After three months you will:

  • Be liaising with other departments or organisation’s to obtain or provide information necessary for the assessment of Tax /bills
  • Have a good understanding of the role of the Council as Billing Authority, its responsibilities, relationship with other services within the Council and external bodies
  • Understand our customer service principles and able to answer calls to our customer service team
  • Understand Liability to pay, provide advice on discounts and exemptions, and conduct account processing

After six months you will:

  • Understand the recovery process and when reminders are issued
  • Create and agree arrangements with customers that have fallen behind
  • Understand our review process to detect and highlight fraud and be able to decide if action needs to be taken.
  • Have an understanding of the benefits system and how payments are made

After twelve months you will:

  • Be able to process all changes in circumstances that residents advise us of answering the majority of questions raised in calls/emails and other correspondence.
  • Understand how overpayments of benefits occur, the actions taken to prevent it from happening, and the recovery methods used if it does happen
  • Have a good understanding of the law relating to valuation, liability, and demands

After eighteen months you will:

  • Understand the law we must comply with so that you can provide a definitive answer to questions raised

  • GCSE’s grade C+/5 or above in mathematics and English or equivalent qualification / experience

Future prospects

By the end of the apprenticeship you’ll be a confident business administrator with a background in council tax and other forms of legislation. You may be able to continue your career in this field, or otherwise the skills you learn will be transferable within other areas of the Council or to other employers.

Things to consider

May come across difficult customers on occasions but you will have support and we ensure you have some training to deal with difficult customers.

Need to ensure can travel to our Head Office base in Honiton.

The Business Administrator – Apprenticeship Standard (Level 3) contains the following elements:

  • Business Administrator Gateway to End Point Assessment 
  • Business Administrator - End Point Assessment

Assigned a workplace buddy on your first day to help you settle into the Council.  You will also receive the following;

  • A thorough induction and welcome programme to help you understand the way things work at the Council and in our Revenues Team
  • Regular 1:1 support from your line manager to help you stay on track
  • Support from your team through regular team meetings
  • 20% off the job per week to focus on course work
