Have you always had a passion or interest for all things mechanical? Did you tinker with vehicles and engines and wondered how to make a career out of it? If so, why not apply to be part of our programme! The aim of this Heavy Vehicle Apprenticeship programme is to equip our apprentices with the skills and knowledge to competently maintain our fleet of vehicles whilst achieving an industry recognised Level 3 qualification.

As part of the Apprenticeship Programme, you will have the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge whilst carrying out maintenance and repairs on heavy vehicles in your workplace, this will include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical vehicle systems. The successful candidate will form part of a professional on-site engineering team who are responsible for maintaining our large fleet. To ensure this fleet is serviced and maintained to the highest standards we are looking for driven, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals to join our team.

Vehicle servicing and maintenance is challenging, practical work, every vehicle will present a new problem to solve but you will feel satisfied when the job is done, and the vehicle is back on the road.

Some of the tasks you will be working on include:

  • Vehicle safety inspections
  • Observing and assisting senior technicians
  • Servicing vehicles – carrying out checks and general maintenance according to the manufacturers’ guidelines
  • Repairing and replacing faulty parts and components
  • Maintaining repair and service records
  • Following health and safety procedures

Using engineering tools and equipment - including hand and power tools, engineering and technical manuals and diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment.

About the employer

Here at Towens we are proud of our history and record in waste management and construction services, our association with Weston Super Mare, its business council and residents. Mainarea Ltd trading as Towens of Weston began on 14th July1992 from a small yard on the Weston Europark. We did pretty much anything in the early days, except skips as Andy Towens was not permitted to compete with his previous employer under the terms of his severance. At this time Woodspring District were very supportive finding various civil engineering works for us to carry out. In 1994 Towens merged with C-T plant a local plant hire company and the operation was moved to a small depot on Rectors way. In 1997 we purchased two plots of land in Warne Road, moved in and began the skip side of the business. Soon after the millennium we were able to purchase some of the old Hutton Moor allotment land which backed onto our plot and it is this site that we occupy today. In 2002 following 8 years of steady growth Mainarea Ltd changed to the two operating companies Towens of Weston Ltd and Towens Waste Management Ltd that you see today. We handle well over half a million tonnes of waste and recycled aggregate per year and have developed the site into a fully functioning trade waste processing and recycling facility. In 2012 we were successful in purchasing the old council transport depot opposite our main site and expanded our operation further. 2015 saw the completion of our own vehicle maintenance workshop on the site of one of the original 2 plots purchased in 1997 and the formation of Towens Fleet Services Ltd.

S&B Automotive Academy is a specialist automotive training provider located in Bristol; S&B works in partnership with TOWENS GROUP LTD to deliver the heavy vehicle apprenticeship programme over a 3-year period which culminates in an end point assessment. 

Training is delivered in the workplace and via seven one-week college blocks per year at S&B Automotive Academy, this means you will be required to travel to the college and stay in accommodation whilst on blocks for the duration of the programme. All associated costs for training are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you.  

The apprentice will be assigned a workplace mentor and a college mentor who will offer support, advice and guidance by monitoring progress through the use of electronic logbook which both employer and apprentice will have access to 24/7 365 days a week.

As a result, you will receive the following qualification:

  • Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths & English (if not already achieved)
