Duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • To work in partnership with senior staff, particularly the room leader of base room, adhering to company policies & procedures
  • Ensuring compliance with the Children’s Act, Health and Safety legislation, equality legislation all within the requirements and guidelines laid down by the Childcare Act 2006, the Early Years Statutory Framework and by Ofsted
  • To act as a Key person within the designated room of the nursery
  • To be responsible for ensuring that all tasks that ensure the effective running of the room are completed at the correct time and to the expected standard
  • To contribute to the systems to support learning and development in the room
  • To take overall responsibility for key children's learning and development and make sure that all relevant paperwork to track progress is accurate and completed on time
  • To offer support and guidance to all members of the team, in support of the room leader to help them complete their duties to the required standard
  • To ensure that the room and equipment within it, is clean and safe at all times and that any concerns are correctly forwarded to senior staff in line with the procedures of the setting
  • To ensure that the room is presented in an attractive manner, that the room is welcoming to all children and families and display work is frequently updated to provide interest and stimulation to the children
  • To follow instruction from the room leader in relation to staffing arrangements
  • Attending and participating in staff meetings both for the room and the wider nursery
  • To attend any relevant training events that will help to improve your professional practice and effectiveness within the team
  • Assisting with staff inductions and helping new staff to settle into the nursery
  • Providing feedback to the room leader on issues relating to the nursery day
  • To be welcoming and professional at all times and strive to build positive relationships with colleagues, parents, children and visitors
  • To attend all arranged college sessions whether training provided is in-house or at college (Apprentice)
  • To make sure that all work set by college is completed promptly to ensure you achieve your qualification in a timely manner
  • To be responsible for being prepared for any workplace assessments and to make sure that any arrangements are communicated effectively to the relevant senior members of the team

These lists of duties are not exhaustive and you may be required to carry out other duties appropriate to the post as directed by the Nursery Manager and operations manager or deputy manager.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • NVQ Level 2 in Childcare (or sufficient experience to allow starting on the Level 3 apprentice award)
  • Experience in a similar role or in an environment working closely with children
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • An understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum

Personal qualities

  • A commitment to achieving functional skills in English, maths and ITC if not previously achieved a GCSE grade 4 (C) or above
  • Team player
  • Health & Safety awareness
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to use own initiative
  • Good communication skills with children, staff members and parents

Desired qualifications
