We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic apprentice to join our Grounds Department. The role will involve being part of a small team involved in maintaining and enhancing the School grounds, sports pitches and gardens. There will be an opportunity to learn a wide variety of technical skills as well as achieving a Level 2 qualification in Sports Turf Operative Apprenticeship Main Duties: • To work as part of the grounds team but also within the gardens team when required, in order to achieve a high standard grounds and gardens maintenance service. • To undertake grounds duties including: o Routine preparation and maintenance work on a range of sports facilities and surfaces including grass and artificial surfaces. o Setting up sports pitches and amenity surfaces. o Undertaking minor construction and landscaping work o Operating a variety of turf machinery and powered hand tools, ensuring equipment is regularly maintained o Undertaking a range of horticultural operations such as applying fertilisers and weed control o Maintaining hedges around the site o Applying salt in icy conditions and clearing snow when required o Clearing leaves during the autumn and winter months o Maintaining the school gardens to a high standard • This is a broad summary of tasks and responsibilities to be carried out within this role. The Post Holder may be asked to carry out duties of a similar nature bearing in mind their capabilities. The Post Holder must undertake any reasonable task requested of them by the Grounds Manager or a senior member of the School staff.

• 5 GCSE’s in the A* - E or 9 – 3 range • Successful Interview • Either hold or have the ability to achieve a D - E in English and Maths GCSE’s (3 - 4) or Level 1 Functional Skills • Initial assessment may be required in English and Maths Desirable – a qualification in sports turf or grounds & gardens related subject • Physically capable – there is some manual work and dexterity required. • Good time keeping. • Capable of being aware of surroundings and can assess dangers. • Shows initiative and actively assists when working with others. • Takes personal responsibility for completing tasks to the required standard.

Personal qualities

• Able to develop an organised and methodical approach to work. • Adopts a positive and friendly attitude when working with staff • Willing to learn new skills. • Willing to follow instructions. • Able and willing to work outside in all weathers.

Future prospects

Apprentices can progress to supervisory level employment within the industry or progress to Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship). Advanced Apprentices may progress to higher level employment or Level 4 and 5 training.

This role will require manual work and working outside regardless of the weather. Wage dependant on age, in line with Apprentice National Minimum Wage.
