Some of your key responsibilities will include -


  • Help the department take care of laboratory equipment and apparatus
  • Carrying out and arranging for maintenance and repair of resources including weekly checks of equipment.
  • Helping construct and modify apparatus
  • Stock-taking and supporting the storing of chemicals and equipment
  • Help obtain materials by local purchase
  • Ensure that all health and safety requirements are met according to regulations including COSHH


  • Trialling practical activities reflecting on the benefit to students
  • Preparing, supporting setting up and checking materials and equipment required by the subject teacher prior to lessons
  • To provide support to teaching staff and students of all key stages during lessons as and when needed
  • Assisting in assembling apparatus, delivering equipment to rooms to help improve the quality of lessons
  • Occasionally assisting in class practical including carrying out demonstrations
  • Caring for plants and/or animals, where appropriate
  • Collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores
  • Along with other department staff assist with General Laboratory cleaning: bench surfaces and fixed equipment (laboratory sinks, emptying/supervising the emptying of sink traps)
  • Disposing of waste materials


  • Supporting the development of risk assessments for technician activities
  • Providing support to experienced and trainee teachers including health and safety guidance
  • Keeping up to date with developments in practical science, technology and health and safety requirements
  • Helping carry out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms, manufacturing areas and stores


  • Attend and participate in staff and working group meetings and training as appropriate
  • Adhere to and work within Walsall Academy practices and policies

Walsall Academy in Bloxwich, Walsall opened in September 2003. The student enrolment is around 1200 with approximately 320 students in the Sixth Form.
