    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

If you love children and want to pursue a career working with them then you can achieve your level 2 and level 3 in childcare. There will also be an opportunity for you to start on a foundation degree at university after completion of your apprenticeship.

You must be willing to commit to at least 30 hours a week term time, while working and training towards your qualification. You must be cheerful, hardworking and responsible. A current DBS is an advantage.

Purpose of Post:

  • To provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children placed in the Setting;
  • To give support to other personnel within the Setting;
  • To implement the daily routine in the base room.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Ideally you will have GCSEs or equivalent Maths and English grade A-C

Qualifications required

Ideally candidates will have GCSEs grade A*-C or equivalent qualifications.

Future prospects

Progression onto the Level 3 Early Years Advanced Apprenticeship to be considered upon successful completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship programme in addition to GCSE grades A-C in Maths and English.

As part of our apprenticeship recruitment process, you will be required to attend a Numeracy, Literacy and Interview Assessment at our Futureskills Campus on Dakota Avenue, Salford, M50 2PU. Should you be successful at this stage, we will then submit your application to the employer for further consideration. Individuals who already have a Level 4 qualification are now eligible for a Level 5 or above Higher Apprenticeship only. They are not eligible for funding for an Intermediate Level, Advanced Level or Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship.

About the employer

Here at Tiny Steps we provide a professional caring environment for children aged 0 to 5 years. Staff work hand in hand with parents to follow the EYFS curriculum to enable children to progress and learn to the best of their ability. We are a purpose built 55 place private day nursery and Pre-School made up of 3 rooms, baby room, toddler room and pre-school. The main characteristics of our settings are that we are a small and friendly nursery with a happy atmosphere. We have good, positive relationships with all of our parents. Our setting is very multi-cultural with a variety of children from different ethnic backgrounds with culturally diverse staff members.

Training provider

Training will be provided in order to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young Peoples Workforce. Functional Skills Level 1 Maths, English and ICT are completed with the Apprentice if a prior GCSE grade A-C or equivalent has not already been achieved. You may be expected to attend Salford City College 1 day per week for Functional Skills classes if required.
