Full overview:

You will learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen, giving you the opportunity to experience, consider and value each section. You will carry out duties under the supervision of chefs.

Main Duties:

  • Prepare, cook and plate menu items in a consistent and timely manner
  • Use and maintain knives and kitchen equipment to prepare, cook and present food
  • Assist with food stock checks and ensure the storage areas are in good order
  • Identify shortages and food close to expiry date
  • Assist with waste management
  • Assist with deliveries of stock items and dispose of waste products in accordance with food safety and hygiene standards
  • Select and prepare meat, vegetables etc. in accordance with food safety & hygiene standards
  • Contribute to the cleaning of the kitchen and equipment
  • Work effectively with others to ensure dishes produced are of high quality, delivered on time and to the standard required
  • Work in accordance with the risk assessment of the business to avoid injury or damage to self or property

Desired qualifications

The ideal candidate will have 5 GCSE in the range of 9-3 (A* to E), including English and maths (or equivalent qualifications). Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. Individuals who have not yet achieved English and maths at GCSE Grade D / Functional Skills Level 1 (or equivalent qualification) or above will need to do so in order to complete this Apprenticeship.

Future prospects

  • On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will be qualified to work as a Commis Chef
  • Progression from this apprenticeship is expected to be into a Chef de Partie role or production chef role

Things to consider

  • DBS checks are required for this role
  • Working hours are shifts, to include some evenings and weekends
  • Progression after completion of the first year of Apprenticeship to the National Living Wage rate
