Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Will manage and maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the kitchen, planning and preparation of residents meals, menu’s and generally upkeep the general standards of hygiene ensuring that all requirements of the food act (1990) or subsequent are met
  • Particular attention to Personal hygiene and appearance and use of PPE
  • To adhere to all food handling regulations at all times
  • To adhere to home policies and procedures at all times with particular attention to infection control policy
  • To daily inspect the kitchen with regards to tidiness and cleanliness and to perform any cleaning tasks as required within one’s own competency and as per cleaning schedules and Environmental Health inspectorate paperwork
  • To prepare and serve the residents meals as per nutrition and food safe guidelines and in accordance with allergies, food consistency and fortification
  • Refer maintenance work which needs attention, and which falls outside one’s sphere of competence
  • To ensure that any appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, cooking ranges etc. are kept clean and in good, safe working order and within correct temperature ranges
  • To bring any faults to the attention of the manager/maintenance
  • To be aware of the nature of the residents cared for in the home and to ensure all cleaning substances are kept locked away safely when not in use and are within sight when being used
  • To plan and prepare high quality and nutritious meals for our residents which take into account their individual religious, cultural and health needs
  • To supervise any junior catering staff, allocate duties and quality assurance
  • To yearly appraise the performance of all kitchen staff
  • To assist the manager to resolve any complaints regarding catering or food
  • To order supplies and monitor them to ensure that these are of the required quality, quantity and accounted for
  • To be a member of the team and report any significant observations regarding residents to the nurse in charge without delay
  • To at all times conduct oneself in a manner which upholds the good reputation of the home, to uphold the home’s confidentiality policy at all times
  • To ensure the correct and economical use of materials and equipment and ensure that wastage is kept to a minimum
  • Ensure that there are always snacks and foodstuffs available for the residents at all times and tea time meals are sufficiently pre-pared and stored for care staff (where applicable)
  • To ensure hazard analysis (HASSAP) is completed wherever applicable
  • To adhere to the cleaning schedule whilst still being flexible and prioritising cleaning duties according to need

  • Following instructions for food as the needs of the residents change

Must have the following attributes:

  • Friendly, hardworking, being relatable
  • Cleanliness and tidiness is imperative
  • A clean and tidy appearance with good personal hygiene

Desired qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C/4 or equivalent
  • Working towards or have already attained their Level 2 in Food Hygiene

Future prospects

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship it may be possible to progress to a permanent position and on to Head Chef.

Things to consider

Own transportation is desirable however there are regular buses that fit in with our hours of work into town and the surrounding villages.
