A unique opportunity to learn the practical skills and expertise of making leather. The leather craftsperson apprentice will be working within the tannery department of a Yeovil based firm learning all the skills required to turn an animal hide into premium quality leather.

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

Apprentices will learn to perform a variety of handwork and machine-operated tasks in the manufacturing of finished leather. Operations include processing both sheep skin and bovine hides.

The apprentice will undertake these Main Duties either individually or as part of a team: 

  • Carry out mechanical processes on leather – e.g. Size and substance sorting, area measuring, using automated leather softening machinery, dry drumming/milling, spraying, roller coating, printing, embossing and perforating, vacuum drying, flesh removal, setting out
  • Carry out handwork processes on leather – e.g. Trimming of bovine sides, horsing up, hand padding, hand antiquing
  • Mixing and preparation of top finish coating solutions to achieve colour matched output
  • Interpret how proposed operations are carried out, setting machines up to facilitate leather processing and finishing from work instructions
  • Carry out set up testing to ensure machinery is adjusted correctly before production begins
  • Carry out quality checks and measurements on material in process e.g. moisture content, thickness, appearance and fault checking

5 GCSEs grades 4 to 9 (A* to C) or equivalent including maths and English Language.

Future prospects

Potentially a full-time position on completion of apprenticeship.

Things to consider

  • You will be working within a factory environment
  • All of the hides and skins used in the factory are already in a tanned state and none are in their raw state
  • Some aspects of the work involve using chemicals for treating the leather – appropriate personal protection equipment will be provided
  • There may be some heavy lifting of hides when wet
  • There will be frequent repetitive handling of much lighter weight individual skins and hides
