Once the body repair technicians have worked their magic repairing the vehicle, it will then be your job to restore the vehicles paint work back to its glory.

This involves:

  • Preparation - stripping, sanding and masking
  • Etching and priming areas to be treated
  • Colour matching and mixing
  • Paint application techniques including spray booth technology
  • Buffing and polishing methods
  • Paint defect corrections
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment
  • Storing paints in the correct conditions

A certain amount of administration and customer interaction is also required:

  • Keeping a record of work carried out and time taken
  • Liaising with the customer or insurance company
  • Providing quotations and estimations

You may also carry out valeting, to ensure the vehicles look as good as new.

  • Wash down the outside of the car to remove dirt and mud
  • Polish the windows, wheels, door handles and mirrors

Wage is at least National Minimum for an apprentice and depends on experience.

Hours can vary slightly from starting at 8.30 or 9am.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

The job involves numerous activities, will need to be comfortable with a wide range of vehicles. As a Paint Technician, you will often be working alongside panel beaters, so good communication and being able to follow instructions would be good skills to have.

Personal qualities

Commitment and enthusiasm are a must and a passion for motor vehicles and physical work would be an advantage.

Desired qualifications

If you have achieved a level 2 or higher in vehicle paint, you may not be eligible for the apprenticeship. Minimum of GCSE (or equivalent) grades of 9-4/A*-C in English and maths.

Things to consider

You'd be using specialist equipment like a manual spray gun along with various masks and breathing apparatus, which requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. This is a Vehicle Damage Paint Apprenticeship programme, delivered by Remit Group.

Awarding Body: Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Training is delivered in the workplace and on block release at the Remit Automotive Academy in Derby. This means you will be required to stay in a hotel for 12 separate weeks (Monday - Fridday) over the duration of the programme, which equals 4 weeks per year. All associated costs for training are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you.

You will also be assigned a dedicated Development Coach who will visit you every 4-6 weeks either in the workplace or remotely via Microsoft Teams, giving 1-2-1 advice and guidance to help you achieve the following IMI qualifications:

  • Vehicle Damage Paint Technician Level 3
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English & maths (if required)
