Three maintenance apprentices required to learn general engineering skills in order to work towards assisting the Field Service Engineer with breakdowns and maintenance work.

The job role will include:

  • Attending college full time for the first 12 months
  • Gain hands on operational experience on all aspects of field engineering by assisting the Field Service Engineer to minimise downtime on fault call outs and respond promptly and efficiently to fault call outs
  • To achieve a satisfactory level of competence to carry out first and second line maintenance on any equipment as contracted by VAS
  • To accurately fill in timesheets and complete reports required by VAS management
  • To assist with the installation and commissioning of equipment as required by VAS management
  • To ensure that all relevant working practices comply with the statutory Health and Safety at Work Act and with other external customer requirements as applicable
  • To achieve a satisfactory level of competence in order to carry out repairs to module level on site and component level in the workshop
  • To assist with the delivery and / or collection of equipment modules from site to VAS or other locations as required
  • To assist with stock control or fault control if deemed necessary by VAS management
  • To aim at achieving and maintaining standards of quality compatible to ISO9002
  • Comply with VAS's Quality Management System
  • Comply with VAS's Occcupational Health, Safety and Environment policies and procedures
  • Comply with security in accordance with established policies and procedures of the organisations
  • Other duties as requested. 

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Driving Licence required in order to drive to customers' sites to carry out the maintenance work
  • Experience is not essential but it would be advantageous if you can demonstrate your interest in engineering through studies or hobbies / DIY projects at home
  • If studied engineering at school / college you can demonstrate this with portfolio or photographs of your work
  • Good verbal and written communications
  • Good maths skills

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE, or equivalents, grade B/5+ in English, maths and science, as a minimum

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship you will become a Service Engineer, visiting customers in the aerospace, automotive and medical sectors. They are mainly based in the U.K. but some foreign travel is inevitable.

This training for this apprenticeship will require the apprentice to attend college (In-Comm Training Services Ltd in Aldridge, WS9 8UG) full time for the first 12 months. After this, you will attend college just one day per week for the remaining two years. 

The training will include:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement techniques (covered in induction)
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Assembling and testing fluid power systems
  • Maintaining electrical equipment systems
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment circuits
  • Preparing and using milling machines
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Using computer software packages to assist with engineering activities
  • Producing cad models (drawings) using a cad system
  • General welding applications

All apprentices will be required to achieve as  a minimum:

  • An employer approved Level 2 Foundation Competence qualification
  • An employer approved Level 3 Development Competence qualification
  • An employer approved Level 3 Development Technical Knowledge qualification
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking end point assessment
