This role includes:

  • Preparation of materials and equipment for science practical work
  • Preparing solutions, assembling apparatus, delivering equipment and materials to science laboratories as requested
  • Collecting materials and equipment from laboratories after use, checking and safe storage
  • Disposal of used or unwanted materials in a safe manner in accordance with all applicable legislation
  • Completing basic repairs to laboratory equipment or arranging for repairs to be carried out by qualified and experienced external suppliers when required
  • Ensuring all laboratory equipment is in a good state of repair, checked regularly and stored safely in accordance with requirements
  • Construction or modifying equipment under the direction of science teaching staff to meet with the trailing of new practical science activities to meet curricular requirements
  • Assisting science teachers in the classroom in delivering practical activities
  • Carrying out annual updating of risk assessment of all activities related to science teaching, materials and equipment
  • Risk assessment of new science practical’s and activities
  • Ensuring that science textbooks are available for lessons as required and that they are in good condition
  • Ordering of materials and equipment for science to meet teaching requirements, monitoring costs against budgeted levels
  • Maintaining control of chemical and consumable stocks ensuring that the required stock levels are maintained
  • Taking responsibility for the storage and handling of radioactive sources, ensuring these are safely and securely stored at all times
  • Setting up of laboratory datalogging equipment
  • Any other appropriate duties which, from time to time, may be requested

Desired qualifications

Science GCSE’s or equivalents at grade 5 or above maths and English GCSE or equivalents at grade 4 or above.

The right candidate may be employed after completing the apprenticeship. All candidates will have a bright future as a Lab Technician in front of them. A job role that is in high demand in many sectors of the economy. The Royal Society of Biology, Royal Society of Chemistry and Institute of Physics have worked together with the Science Council to publish learning guides intended to further enhance career prospects and support the professional standards they have a duty to uphold within their Royal Charters, which means you will have the opportunity to develop a professional career in science.
