  • Ensure a safe working environment whilst students are within the Construction area (Brick, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating)
  • Support the carrying out of safety checks on a regular basis and keeping appropriate records. Lease with the Health and Safety officer to ensure risk assessments remain updated and functional
  • Support the upkeep and maintenance of equipment
  • Ensure the unserviceable equipment is removed from use and repaired or replaced as quickly as possible
  • Assist the teaching staff by preparing the workshops in accordance with their requirements
  • Assist in the ordering materials and equipment for use in the assigned area in conjunction with Programme Managers and teaching teams
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and ensure tools are fit for purpose
  • Work in close co-operation with members of Programme Teams and other working groups. This will include attending meetings of Programme Teams and other working groups, as appropriate
  • Update regularly in specialist area and participate in Staff Development activities as directed – in particular undertake training as a Fire Marshall, in First Aid and in driving the college minibus
  • Be involved in the recruitment of students by undertaking promotional activities such as Open Days and Open Evenings
  • Attend and participate in regular staff and team meetings, to communicate and support the College’s commitment to provide effective channels of communication to and from staff and learners and promote safe working practices across teams. Where applicable to the job role, this may include participating in work placement assessments and student preparation, the provision of information, instruction, training and supervision and the monitoring of learners in accordance with the Safe Learner Blueprint
  • Undertake other tasks, as directed, to meet the needs of the College; work flexibly; and take personal responsibility for retaining and developing competence
  • Support, comply and promote the College’s equality and diversity, health and safety, smoking, safeguarding, and other policies, processes, arrangements and objectives
  • To adhere to the Risk Management Policy and to notify their line manager of any identified risk

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Work experience in the Construction industry, particular being on site
  • Practical understanding of the content of vocational Construction courses
  • Ability to oversee and manage the department’s Construction equipment
  • Knowledge of the likely support the requirements of Construction staff and students
  • The ability to plan work and adhere to time schedules
  • A working knowledge of risk assessments, PAT and health and safety within Construction
  • Ability to work as part of a team with staff and employers

Personal qualities

  • Physical fitness sufficient to carry move or transfer moderately heavy or bulky items of equipment
  • The personality and attributes to be able to work comfortably with both young and mature students
  • An enthusiasm for all aspects of the post 16 education and a commitment to the well being of students

  • A flexible and responsive attitude to the likely changing demands of the post

Desired qualifications

  • Minimum Level 2 qualification in Brick, Carpentry or Painting and Decorating (or other related discipline to Construction)
  • GCSE or Level 2 equivalent qualification grade A*-C/9-4 in English and mathematics
