Coates and Partners are a traditional accountancy practice recruiting a Trainee Accountant. Duties include bookkeeping, VAT returns, preparation of year-end accounts and using a variety of software options.

We are on the lookout for an Apprentice Accountant to join our friendly team in Ashbourne.
Reporting into the Accounts Manager, your duties will be as follows:

  • Undertaking bookkeeping duties for clients Calculating/processing VAT returns Assisting with the preparation of year-end accounts.
  • Using accountancy software such as SAGE, Xero, QuickBooks & Digita to manage accounts.
  • Some financial administration duties where required.
  • Opportunity to support with Payroll on occasions.
  • Full training and support will be provided by the employer and training provider.

The employer is flexible with the duties that can be provided and are happy to consider applicants wishing to study a higher level AAT qualification. 


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Strong communication skills and able to tailor style of communication depending on the individual.
  • A keen attention to detail – crucial when inputting figures and identifying errors.
  • Excellent numerical and logical skills.
  • Some prior knowledge or qualifications in accountancy desirable.

Personal qualities

  • Have the ability to maintain confidentiality – you may be exposed to sensitive financial information, so it is important that this type of information is not disclosed.
  • Are honest & trustworthy – strong integrity & ethics are essential Are eager to learn new skills and able to follow processes.
  • Highly professional at all times.

Desired qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalents, which must include English & maths.
  • Accountancy/Finance A-Level would be desirable. 
  • If you would like to study towards a qualification above level 2 you will need to have completed the AAT qualification level below the one you are wishing to study. e.g. if you would like to study towards AAT level 3 you must already achieved your AAT level 2.  

Future prospects

On successful completion of your apprenticeship, it is envisaged that you will continue working through the AAT qualification levels.

The practice is located in Ashbourne, a driving licence would be beneficial for candidates who don't live locally as public transport may not be an option depending on your location.
