We’re looking for an Apprentice Butcher to join our award-winning retail butchery team. You’ll work alongside our highly knowledgeable and reputable butchers, who’ll teach you modern techniques as well as the foundations of good butchery, alongside completing your Level 2 Apprenticeship Standards in Butchery.

This is an exciting opportunity which offers a successful and rewarding career in the craft of butchery, within our growing business. This is a full-time position (Tuesday - Saturday) and will include online learning and on-site training within our shop.

On a typical day you could:

  • Buy, order, store and control stock
  • Receive deliveries and check their content and hygiene
  • Move meat stock to cold storage areas
  • Create product displays
  • Cut, bone and trim meat
  • Serve customers
  • Advise customers on how to prepare and cook meat

We work with Meat Ipswich to provide your apprenticeship. You’ll be allocated an external trainer who’ll regularly review your progress, as well as being mentored, supported and trained by us. The length of your apprenticeship is around 18 - 24 months, with the chance to join our team as a butcher once you have completed your training.

Desired skills

You should be a confident and good communicator with a strong attention to detail. As well as being able to work both in a team and individually.

You should be able to follow instructions well and know when to ask for additional guidance.  

Good numeracy and literacy skills.

Personal qualities

You should be hardworking, friendly and love good food.

We expect you to engage with the wider team (including deli and waiting staff), to help you offer excellent customer service.

A keenness to improve and learn new skills is a must, as well as an appreciation for the craft of butchery, our business and the wider community.

Desired qualifications

Numeracy, literacy and IT skills are required, but qualifications aren’t absolutely necessary.

Future prospects

On completion of your apprenticeship, you may be offered the chance to join our team as a fully qualified butcher – helping to shape the future of our growing business with your skills and ideas.

Things to consider

The nature of butchery means it can be physically demanding – with early starts, late finishes and weekend work. Our work load varies seasonally, with Christmas and Easter being particularly busy periods.

Butchery is a traditional craft which is suffering a skills shortage. Good butchers are in demand, with particular demand for those willing to master the traditional skills and bring them in line with modern tastes and trends. We are particularly interested in sustainable food production and strive to be as transparent with our customers as possible.
