Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Work with small groups on tasks designated by the teacher
  • Implement recording systems devised by the teacher
  • Contribute to and carry out agreed behaviour management programmes including implementing reward systems
  • Contribute to and carry out agreed individual pupil programmes devised by the teacher including feeding and drinking skills as appropriate
  • Assist the pupils in their intimate and personal hygiene needs as appropriate, taking account of individual development programmes
  • Support educational activities off site
  • Supervise pupils at play or leisure and develop their skills
  • Move non-ambulant pupils with due regard to their dignity and the safety of both pupils and staff and in accordance with advice given in any risk assessments
  • Be alert to child protection issues and promptly report any concerns to the Child Protection Liaison Officer, i.e. the Head Teacher
  • Be aware of the need to maintain a safe environment, reporting any urgent hazards promptly to the School Business Manager or the Head Teacher and record all faults in the file provided at reception
  • Be sensitive to the children's state of health, alerting the teacher or trained First Aider to any perceived problems
  • Support pupils’ emotional needs as required
  • Liaise with the class teacher and contribute to discussions on individual pupils
  • Communicate with each pupil in a manner appropriate to their age, ability and their mode and style of communication
  • Liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team including parents, volunteers and students
  • Take responsibility for passing on messages and information accurately
  • Become familiar with and abide by all school policies
  • Participate in the school in-service programme
  • Gain knowledge of individual pupil needs within the class group
  • Develop and maintain skills needed within the classroom (e.g. MAKATON signs and symbols, PODD, PECS and TEACCH), as required by pupils in the class
  • Undertake a programme of work, study and training designed to develop the skills and abilities of the apprentice to achieve a nationally recognised standard
  • Participate in the school's Performance Management System

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with an excellent standard of written and spoken English
  • Good administrative and organisational skills
  • Ability to interest, encourage, motivate and engage children
  • Ability to work as part of a team; working effectively with people across a wide range of levels and responsibilities
  • Computer literate – must have good ICT skills including a working knowledge of MS packages e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel etc, as well as using and updating records and databases
  • Ability to work using own initiative, exercising good judgement where unsupervised
  • Flexibility of approach to work
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; having tact and diplomacy where necessary

Personal qualities

We are looking for someone to join us to support a class of pupils, working under the direction of a class teacher.

The successful applicant will need the following qualities and ability to:

  • Work with small groups of pupils on directed tasks
  • Supervise pupils during play and leisure times
  • Support pupils when participating in off-site educational activities
  • Support teachers with implementing behaviour management programmes
  • Move and handle non-ambulant pupils

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE or equivalent grade C/4 or above in English and maths

Future prospects

  • Following successful completion of a Level 3 qualification individuals with the necessary expertise could move into classroom management posts within the school
  • This pathway also offers participants a doorway into the teaching profession. It offers the chance to work in an educational setting with children of all ages and the experience gained from this apprenticeship in a practical teaching environment is invaluable
  • Other career paths which employees from Woodlands have moved onto include physiotherapy, educational psychology, nursing and speech therapy
