A unique opportunity to learn the practical skills and expertise of making leather goods. The leather goods craftsperson apprentice will be working within the UK Consumer Production department of a Yeovil based firm learning all the skills required to turn premium quality leather into luxury leather goods.

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for working efficiently and accurately to agreed product specifications and customer requirements, using both hand and machine skills, within agreed production deadlines and to the required quality standard. You will report to line managers and supervisors and will often interact with production colleagues.

The apprentice will undertake these Main Duties either individually or as part of a team: 

  • Quality check materials and components for faults
  • Leather cutting operations
  • Skive materials (shaving/reducing weight) ready for next stage of production
  • Prepare materials ready for next stage of production
  • Ink / paint raw / cut leather edges
  • Hand / Machine sew leather components and where applicable
  • Assemble the components to produce the finished product
  • Examine finished leather / leather product for quality
  • Repair and/or rework leather/leather goods
  • Package product and label for onward journey

Person Specification:
Applicants need to be dexterous and well-applied individuals and be able to demonstrate the necessary attributes to work in the leather industry which include:

  • Good hand-eye co-ordination
  • Attention to detail
  • Good manual handling skills
  • Ability to work on highly repetitive work at high levels of productivity
  • Health, Safety and Environmental awareness
  • Quality consciousness

We expect the apprentice to be reliable, on time, good attendees who are trustworthy and enthusiastic!

Qualifications Required:
5 GCSEs grades 4 to 9 (A* to C) or equivalent including Maths and English Language
Completion of an initial assessment by the training provider

39.5 Hours per week
Monday 8.30am to 4.30pm and Tuesday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm (incl. 0.5 hour lunch break) 

£5.00 per hour

Things to consider

  • You will be working within a factory environment, although it is clean and relatively quiet
  • All of the leather used in the factory are already in a tanned state and none are in their raw state
  • Some aspects of the work involves using chemicals for treating the leather – appropriate personal protection equipment will be provided where necessary
  • The work is often of a repetitive nature, but the range of products made can vary considerably
  • Any manual handling done in the factory is of a light nature
