Our Apprentice will support children and assist the Class Teacher in the day to day running of the class. Whilst gaining hands on experiences in our setting, you will be working towards a recognised childcare qualification.

As an Apprentice Teaching Assistant, you will be working in partnership with the Year 1 staff to ensure the daily running of the class, adhering to the policies and procedures of the setting and in compliance with the Children’s Act, Health and Safety Legislations and within the guidelines of Ofsted.

You will help to encourage children in the early stages of their education to develop their independence, self-reliance, initiative and problem-solving skills. You will do this by working in a way that promotes inclusivity of all children by ensuring all have equal access to opportunities to learn, develop and reach their potential. You will learn on the job and benefit from having qualified practitioners to mentor you and support you through your qualification.

Although this apprenticeship is predominantly based in Year 1, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in other areas of the school, including our Breakfast and After School Clubs, to further your own knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of working within a school.

Things to consider

In Year 1 you would be supporting children in the National Curriculum subjects. Special emphasis is placed on early literacy and numeracy skills. It would be useful for you to have researched/have prior knowledge of the teaching of phonics.

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard, which includes:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills may be required, depending upon prior attainment
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Relevant training will be provided through Lancaster and Morecambe College in order to successfully complete the Teaching Assistant programme at Level 3, subject to attending an Apprenticeship Preparation Training Session here at Lancaster and Morecambe College.
