Working across Penhale Infants & Newbridge Junior School sites

£6.15 an hour, Monday-Friday- 8am-4pm, 36.5 hours a week

We are looking for someone who has the drive, passion and skills to work as an Apprentice Administrative Assistant to work between our infant and junior schools. At our schools, we are very proud to have a diverse school community in which many languages, cultures and religions learn together. Both Penhale and Newbridge are very caring and forward thinking, we invest in our staff and use coaching and mentoring to develop skills and expertise. Your new role will involve:

  • Assisting with preparation for school trips
  • Ordering and maintaining stationary and art supplies across both schools
  • Typing letters
  • Ordering lunches
  • Assisting with reception duties
  • Helping to update the schools websites
  • Using the school's management information system
  • General office administration
  • Any other duties the head may ask

All staff will be expected to utilise ICT and to improve communication and reduce paper use. Security procedures must be followed when using ICT systems.

GCSE or equivalent 9-4/A*-C in English, ICT and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in all three

There is no college attendance. Due to this, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating maths and English GCSE/Functional Skills results will not be considered.

The Apprenticeship will focus on Business Administration and includes the following knowledge criteria:

  • Understanding the organisational purpose, activities, aims, values, vision for the future and resources
  • Knows the organisational structure and demonstrates understanding of the benefits, knows their role in the team and recognises how their skills will help them progress
  • Understands Laws, regulations and internal policies all related to their sector
  • Understands relevant external factors (policy change, supply chain, national/global markets, employment)
  • Business Fundamentals – managing change, business finances and project management

What attendance is required?

Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work. Attendance at College may be required to complete some parts of the knowledge units.

It is a Government requirement for you to spend 20% of your apprenticeship working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching – plus a number of other tasks.

Learning and assessment

Apprentices build a portfolio of work and work place assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange on-site visits to observe the apprentices’ ability and skills in their daily role. It is important for the apprentice to take ownership of their own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. The apprentice’s final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment. To achieve a pass or distinction the apprentice will need to score 60%-79% (pass), 80%+ (Distinction).
The three assessments are:

  • Online Knowledge Based 50 multiple choice questions - 60 minutes (33.3%)
  • Portfolio Based Interview – 30-45 minutes (33.3%)
  • Project Improvement Presentation 20-30 minutes (33.3%)

Portsmouth College and Highbury College are in the process of merging to become the City of Portsmouth College. This apprenticeship will be registered under the Highbury College apprenticeship banner, with teaching and learning support from Portsmouth College.
