Bridgwater & Taunton College is seeking flexible and motivated Technicians to assist with the daily operations of the McMillan Theatre. Working at this state-of-the-art facility, you will be a practical and efficient individual with strong communication and teamwork skills.

You will work closely with the Theatre Manager to facilitate all stakeholders that use the theatre including students, community groups and professional companies. You will ensure the technical demands of each user group are met and that a professional service is provided at all times. You will also support the Music & Performing Arts curriculum teams in providing outstanding teaching, learning and assessment across all programmes.

The McMillan Theatre offers a mixed programme of concerts, comedy, dance, drama, musical theatre and local amateur productions, you will never find a dull moment. The venue incorporates a 350 seat auditorium, 120 seat studio, Dance Studio and has full cinematic, theatrical and conference facilities. We have a vibrant team of staff and volunteers who are always willing to assist.


  • To operate sound, lighting and other effects during performances, as directed by members of the creative and production teams
  • To carry out all duties in accordance with the organisation’s Health & Safety Policy and promote a culture of safety
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for learners and other users of the McMillan Theatre
  • Ensure the efficient running of all events you will be involved in from planning stage, through production and consolidation
  • To work together with other members of staff in the event of an emergency and to ensure the public areas of the theatre and/or production space are in a safe and presentable condition
  • Provide support to acts and performers regarding theatre operations
  • Provide a professional theatre experience for acts, performers, visitors and the public
  • Participate and provide support in organising outreach work
  • Be flexible and adaptable with your practical skills and be willing to share your knowledge and time

Supporting Learning and Students:

  • Provide subject support to learners if and when required
  • Supervise learners conduct and comply with health and safety procedures ensuring the welfare of learners
  • Support and maintain resources for high quality teaching learning and assessment processes and commercial activity
  • Ensure learners’ educational experience is varied, enjoyable and achieves primary and additional learning goals
  • Develop and maintain effective and professional relationships with colleagues, learners and external suppliers
  • Attend and participate in the organisation of appropriate College events, e.g. Open Evenings / Days, welcome days and conferences


  • Supports and promotes equality and diversity at the College to ensure equality of opportunity for all students, visitors and staff and the elimination of discriminatory practices

Requirements and prospects

You will need to:

  • Have technical proficiency in preparing for and running shows and events, preferably including rigging, focussing and operating lighting, sound and AV and/or constructing set items

Desired qualifications

You need to have GCSE’s in the 4 to 9 (A* to C) range or equivalent for English and maths, but this is not essential as you will complete Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship if necessary. The successful candidate will also need to complete a diagnostic assessment, which will help us plan the appropriate support required to meet your individual needs.
