The following list of tasks is indicative of the generic tasks which teaching assistants may be routinely expected to do.

These are not intended to be an exclusive or exhaustive list.

Duties will include:

  • Provide support to the class teacher/s and senior teaching assistant - undertake activities with pupils as directed
  • Support pupils with additional needs, following advice provided through school support plans, advice from school-based colleagues and other professionals
  • Provide instructions and guidance to pupils who need additional support in order to access the curriculum at an appropriate level
  • Provide feedback to the teacher/senior teaching assistant on pupils' learning and help gather evidence of progress and attainment in relation to pupils' school support plans
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all the pupils in your care
  • Assist with personal care and hygiene as required, e.g. assist with supervision of toileting
  • Support pupils at outdoor play
  • Contribute to pupil assessments and team planning sessions by liaising with the rest of the class team, parents, and other professionals
  • Attend team staff meetings as appropriate
  • Contribute to the school support plan evaluations and future target setting
  • Assist with classroom activity resourcing and setting up of play-based learning areas

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Good IT skills, ability to use ICT effectively to support learning, and to operate other equipment such as photocopier/DVD
  • Good communication skills

  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Ability to relate well to young people and adults
  • Able to work constructively as part of a team, understand classroom roles and own responsibilities with these

Desired qualifications

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) including maths and English.
