The duties of the post will include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Grass cutting
  • Upkeep of flower beds, borders & trees
  • Tree/flower planting
  • Watering of plants
  • Litter collection/emptying of bins
  • Installation of street furniture
  • Street cleansing
  • Weed spraying
  • Maintenance of open spaces and footpaths
  • To undertake a role in the development and maintenance of the Town Centre, open spaces, recreation areas, play equipment, public footpaths, allotments and the cemetery
  • To undertake a task in support of the development and maintenance of the Town Centre, open spaces, recreation areas, play equipment, public footpaths allotments and the cemetery
  • To ensure that all work allocated is carried out in accordance with the needs of the Council and meets all relevant legal requirements
  • To carry out plant, vehicles and machinery maintenance as required
  • To use the correct equipment for all tasks in a safe manner wearing any necessary personal protective equipment including Hi-Vis items of clothing at all times
  • Ensure that compliance to the relevant health & safety regulations are maintained by one-self and colleagues and bring to the attention of management any deviance
  • To contribute to any investigation into complaints and enquiries from customers and colleagues in accordance with good service practice
  • To provide cover for the Works Supervisor when necessary
  • To attend and contribute to staff meetings

Desired qualifications

GCSEs in the A* - E or 9 – 3 range. Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. Employers who recruit candidates without English and maths at GCSE Grade C/4 (or Functional Skills Level 1) or above must ensure that the candidate achieves this level before the Apprenticeship Standard can be awarded to the individual.

Future prospects

Opportunity to secure full time employment as a horticulture and landscape operative and to further develop your skills by progressing onto the Level 3 Landscape/Horticulture supervisor Apprenticeship should a suitable role become available.

Things to consider

Travelling by public transport can be difficult in Chard, so applicants will need to either be local to the town or have access to their own transport. This role will include working outside in all weathers, some working at heights and weekend working.
