Old Hall Caravan Park in Capernwray, near Carnforth are looking to recruit an Apprentice Landscape Gardener to assist within their busy caravan park. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in horticulture and garden design.

The role is varied, and duties would include:

Assisting in all aspects of setting out, preparation and landscape construction, this would include:

  • Paving
  • Decking
  • Fencing
  • Walling
  • Draining

Soft landscaping such as:

  • Tree and shrub planting
  • Lawn installation
  • General garden maintenance (e.g. mowing, weeding, pruning, hedge cutting etc.)

You will also assist with moving and siting caravans.

The ideal candidate would be local to the area, keen to learn, hardworking, reliable and have some interest or experience in horticulture or landscaping.

You will work 40 hours per week between 8am (earliest start) and 5pm (latest finish), Monday to Friday with some occasional weekend work required. There will be a 30min break for lunch and two 15min breaks, one at 10am and the other at 3pm. Times may vary depending on the season, but this will be discussed at interview. Due to legal restrictions, young people aged 16-17 cannot work more than 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week

You will be paid a minimum of £6.00 per hour. This will be reviewed throughout the programme and may increase depending on performance and progression. 

Training will be provided in the workplace where you will work towards a Level 2 Landscape Operative Apprenticeship.

The ideal candidate must be keen to learn, enjoy a challenge, be honest, hardworking, reliable, and personable and have a keen interest in landscaping & garden design.

The ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative.

Desired qualifications

Qualifications demonstrating sound literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. GCSEs at grades D/3 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English) are desirable.

Please ensure you have listed all qualifications & grades/predicted grades in the appropriate section of this application, paying particular attention to maths & English.

Candidates will be screened as part of the recruitment process and must be able to work at Level 1 in Functional Skills (Maths and English) in order to undertake this Apprenticeship.

Please note that candidates with any qualification at the same level or above in the same subject are ineligible for funding and will not be considered for an Apprenticeship.

Future prospects

Possibility to progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship upon completion.

Things to consider

Candidate must be able to travel to work on time due to the vacancy being based in a rural location with no public transport

You will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Training will be provided in the workplace through Myerscough College where you will work towards a Level 2 Horticulture and Landscape Operative apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)

The following qualifications will be required prior to taking the End-Point Assessments:

  • Emergency First Aid
  • Pesticides: Level 2 Principals of the Safe Handling and application or Pesticides Guidance or Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides
  • Abrasive Wheels Training
