Responsibilities and duties you will learn include:

  • Recognising and implementing health, safety and food hygiene regulations within the industry
  • Learning the basic aspects of a busy, working kitchen
  • Preparation of fresh products for use in daily meal creation
  • Continuously monitoring and ensuring all work and surface areas are clear and cleaned
  • Assisting in cooking, portion control and readying dishes cooked to order
  • Use of kitchen tools and equipment as necessary
  • Understand, implement and maintain strict stock rotation to minimise wastage levels
  • Recognise the importance of starting with the basics including soups, sauces, filleting (knife) skills, etc

  • A sincere interest and passion for baking and cooking
  • Able to take and follow instructions, often working under pressure during busy times
  • Very good communication skills
  • Reliable with very good timekeeping

  • Very good personal hygiene

  • GCSE Grade A-D / 3-9 in maths and English (or equivalent)

Things to consider

As you will be working in a busy kitchen, you must realise you will be on your feet for a large portion of your shift and will encounter very busy times.  As part of this apprenticeship there will be one day per week attendance at Northumberland College, Ashington.

Due to the industry, busy times are weekends and evenings so please be aware this will be within the expected working hours.
