Orion Optics are a telescope manufacturer, the only one in the country to manufacturer telescopes, we are known all over the world for our precise optics, we supply our telescopes to  most universities both in the UK and all over the world, and we have 3 telescope in space at this time. 

We were on the TV programme Made in Britain, a few weeks ago, showing how we start and finish our telescope to the highest standard as required by our customers.

A growing reputation of our products is testimony of their success and quality. Across the length and breadth of the country, telescopes and optical components can be found in universities and private businesses.

Custom made telescopes are helping with cutting edge astronomy projects in ESO's sites in Chile and La Palma and Amateur Afterimages are for ever pushing the boundaries and producing some breath-taking views of the universe.

We are seeking to employ and train an Optical Engineering technician apprentice.

You will be highly trained to work in the world of manufacturing. The initial training will be broad based and could lead to a first appointment as an Optical Engineer.

Optical Engineering Technician of world class telescopes will be involved in:

  • Manufacturing high precision lenses for use in telescopes
  • CNC Programming
  • Setting and running CNC machines
  • Understanding high precision measurements and how the lens will fit into the casing.

Personal qualities

  • A team player
  • Able to produce timely work where required
  • Good understanding of Engineering and Manufacturing are desirable but not essential

Desired qualifications

A passion for engineering is more important that set qualifications although GCSEs at grades D/3 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English Language would be advantageous.

Future prospects

Once you have qualified, you will become an optical engineer.

Things to consider

You will be required to travel to Make UK's training centre in Aston, Birmingham on day release, one day per week.

Whilst the travel will be funded, please be aware that you will need to make your own way to the centre in time to start classes at 8am.

Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations
  • Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations
  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Please note that this Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship will last for 12-18 months. It will involve spending one day per week at MAKE UK's state-of-the-art Training Hub in Aston, and four days per week at the employer's site for the duration of the apprenticeship.
