    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As the bricklaying apprentice you will learn every aspect of construction site work specialising in brick and block work. You will learn how to use specialist hand tools, how to build arches and brick structures along with repairing and restoring brick structures.

You will work to specific time deadlines on large construction sites while using excellent hand to eye coordination. You will work alongside a qualified member of staff who will teach you how to correctly mix up appropriate cement for laying bricks and blocks to bespoke orders.

Desired skills

You will have a clear focus on what you want to do and show motivation and good time keeping skills. You will also need to have an ability to cope with the physical demands of the role.

Transport is preferable, but not a requirement and being able to use their own initiative is essential.

Personal qualities

  • You will be hard working with the ability to use your own initiative.
  • The successful candidate would have to display an eagerness to learn and listen to instruction.
  • You will also have to be a good time keeper.

Qualifications required

Qualifications required for this role include GCSE's grades A* –E in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

Future prospects

Once having completed your level 2 apprenticeship, you will progress onto the advanced level 3 qualification and have the opportunity to work full-time for the company.

About the employer

Dan has actively supported the apprenticeship program for a number of years and has taking on several apprentices who have all successfully achieved the goals to become qualified bricklayers. Dan has worked as a bricklaying contractor for approximately 10 years working mainly on new build sites. He has a good wealth of knowledge and achieves and maintains a high standard of work.
