Job Description

  • To care for all residents’ physical and psychological needs, their belongings and their environment.

A care assistant is required to work with all other staff to help to provide the individual care required by each resident, making sure that each one retains as much dignity and individuality as possible. Under supervision and within limits of personal experience and knowledge, a care assistant plays a major role in creating a happy atmosphere, is involved in wide range of general caring services and duties and is expected to adopt a totally flexible approach and attitude to the challenges of these duties.

Principle duties and responsibilities:

  • To respect the residents privacy, dignity and self respect at all times
  • To help residents with dressing and undressing, washing, bathing and toileting
  • To help residents who have limited mobility or physical disability, making proper use of the aids provided
  • To assist in the control of incontinence, providing comfort with dignity
  • To assist with application of minor dressings and pressure area care
  • To help and care for residents who are dying
  • To assist in giving mental and physical stimulation and helping residents to continue with hobbies and activities both inside and outside of the home
  • To respond promptly to call bells and requests for assistance
  • To read and write reports and care plans, to take part in staff meetings and to attend training sessions when requested to do so
  • To make and change beds, tidy rooms and assist in cleaning duties, including the emptying and cleaning of commodes etc
  • To feed residents who need help, lay tables and trays, serve meals, wash up, prepare light meals and snacks, clean and tidy dining rooms and other communal areas
  • To check, mend and launder clothing
  • To maintain a happy and homely atmosphere
  • To maintain a safe and healthy environment, and to report any hazards to the management
  • To use and maintain all equipment in a safe and respectful way
  • To show politeness and courtesy to all residents, visitors and other members of staff
  • To report any malpractice to the management immediately
  • To carry out any other duties that occur as may be required by experienced staff

Our apprentice salary is £4.00 per hour, in addition to your basic rate of pay we operate a bonus system and offer an additional £0.40 per hour attendance bonus, if there is no sickness and individuals come to work on time during the full rota. We also pay an enhancement of £0.75 per hour for weekends and on any statutory bank holidays you are paid double your basic hour rate therefore £8.00 per hour.

Qualifications required

  • GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C or above in Maths and English 

Future prospects

For the right candidate, there will be the possiblity to become a permanent member of the team.

Things to consider

You may be required to attend Loughborough College one day per week to complete Functional Skills in Maths and English. Care Work is a physically and emotionally demanding job, where patience, kindness and empathy are essential.
