As the apprentice you will be expected to work hard on a daily basis and experience all construction trades. You will be taught how to work quickly, efficiently, as well as safely at all times. You will experience all aspects of construction such as:

  • Carpentry
  • Painting and decorating
  • Brick work
  • Plastering

On a daily basis you will be tidying the construction site, carrying tools, shadowing colleagues and undertaking jobs which will be set out for you within a general build/maintenance trade route.

No formal qualifications are required for the position, however a keen interest in construction and willingness to succeed are essential. 

Future prospects

After completing a level 2 in Maintenance you may be offered a full-time position within the company and the possibility to progress onto other specific trade qualifications.

The Old School House is a care home catering for the needs of elderly ladies and gentlemen, especially those who are suffering from dementia and mental health illness. They provide 24-hour care within their warm and friendly care home. Their residents are cared for by a team of friendly, motivated and qualified staff. They have been awarded the ‘Dementia Quality Mark’ for the past 4 years running. This recognises their sound approach to person centred and relationship centred care.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer#. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
